  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Anything from negotiating with Suppliers, Ranging for our stores, Establishing the Promotional Plan for the year, Reporting key commercial metrics weekly and having end to end ownership of the financials for my buying area. Alongside all this personal development is always an active conversation with plenty of training courses available to help you.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time with Tesco I have: Developed my time management, planning, leadership skills, Commercial/financial knowledge and personal brand significantly during my time with Tesco. Tesco massively encourage their colleagues to develop both their blind spots but also their strengths and always ensure you are provided with the resources to achieve this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Within any commercial role there are ups and downs so it's important to be aware of this prior to applying. From my personal experience they positives always outweigh the negatives as Tesco help to promote a healthy but testing working environment. This provided you the platform to focus on your scheme and make of it what you want, if done well the scheme is very beneficial and can develop you massively.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our trainer sometimes struggles with her workload which can have knock on affect on how you manage your time. Tesco also aren't brilliant as providing a detailed end to end timeline of your scheme however there will be a vague guide in place that you will have as reference.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Tesco are brilliant at supporting you during your time on the scheme, you are provided with time to study during your working week and there is always a contact that can help if you have questions. PeoplePlus also are brilliant at resolving questions and providing learning to aid you in your journey.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The number one benefit from working for Tesco whilst studying on my scheme is the time they provide you weekly to focus on your studying and how well enforced this is. My trainer is instrumental in allowing this to happen, she also is always available to answer any work or admin queries on the course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Most of the learning will come from the job, the qualification helps massively to provided the context behind the job and why you do what you are doing. It also allows you to then build on and improve the way you have been doing things. All the units are very relevant and support your professional development.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Tesco has a great culture for additional activities and really promotes it's colleagues to engage with them, whether this is through: Sports, talks, workshops or conferences. Throughout the year there are regular off-site events/activities and you are given the freedom to decide what you want to do, and when.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Mainly due to the culture and development opportunities. Tesco have been instrumental in developing my core commercial skills and giving me the platform to use them. If you have an eye for the commercial world and want to impact millions of lives then working for Tesco is definitely for you.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • Do your research about the job you're applying for. If you're prepared and aware of what you want to do then it's likely there will be a job for you at Tesco. Your career is a long journey and breadth is a significant beneficial asset so it's worthwhile trying to achieve this whilst you're young or new into the commercial world.
