  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The Job Role has some tasks to it; My Role is to develop and review standard pieces of software that are used in the factory to ensure all pieces of equipment are using the same software. My Role also includes running new installation projects to confirm they are using the correct equipment and to the correct standards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, The first year spent at college focused on "hands on skills" including turning milling and fitting. These skills were crucial and used in my day to day work. The years after were spent at college and university performing academic work, this has again been influential in improving my skills and knowledge of engineering activities.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program although 6 years has been a long time. Sticking with the apprenticeship has been a good decision but at the time it can be challenging to keep engaged with a long 6 year period. Overall the experiences have been good and learning center's are good although the length of the program can be a negative

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The overall structure of the program is good there are pathways and there is always a lot of support and you know the overall aim. However at a lower level (choosing individual units) sometimes the structure can be a little lost and confusion about unit choice The program is well organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support form my employer there are training managers in place to help support us and are on call 24/7 whenever we need them. The support at work is good and they are understanding there can be a lot of pressure in the final years, and accommodate some time to complete academic work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from training providers has been excellent; The first years spent at Warwick college support was good and there were often late night catch up sessions and help if anybody is struggling. The next years at Warwick University are more challenging but the support there is excellent all of the lecturers are contactable by email and willing to help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification helps at work; Although sometimes the technology used throughout college and university can be outdated. An example of this is using older PLC's with the new ones used on site having alot more capabilities. However the core principles spoken about are key to helping in the work environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are often team based events like, Christmas party's and activities the department does together, I was involved in these from the start and these are crucial to allowing a young apprentice to fit into the department and network with other members. There are some events led by apprentices that can be attended but i haven't chosen to attend these.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is very supportive and helpful in completing the apprenticeship. The money you get payed is better than any other company. However the pressure of completing the apprenticeship is high so the money helps. However as a whole the company is very good to work for and you get all the support and equipment you need to complete your work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • The application process was scary, however just relax and sell yourself as a person. Don't focus on technical ability because this will be taught. But focus on the ability to solve problems and think logically. The assesment day is a long day but just stay relaxed and be yourself.
