  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Learning to facilitate systems level networks and harness testing. I coordinate with engineers from other departments to help them perform testing on their modules, features or systems. I work to ensure the safety of everybody using the area. I work with lots of very knowledgeable engineers, on lots of projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I can now do lots that I wasn't able o do before. I can make harnesses, perform tests on harnesses to check they're correct. I can use a variety of JLR specific programs and perform software downloads and physical repairs to modules. I can also learned to organise and plan for meetings better.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it, the department I work in is fantastic there is an excellent attitude towards apprentices in the company I get to study for my degree and get paid at the same time. I get opportunities to improve and to impress all the time which I think is fantastc for my development.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well organised, the college part is poorly managed, but this is by the college and not so much by JLR. Within JLR, the apprenticeship is managed very well, as it is managed my individual managers and supervisors in my department so that they get the most benefit from me being in the department.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support, there are 4 or 5 designated people that I can go to if I have any issues, including my manager and supervisor in my department. I do believe that everybody wants the best for me and if I have an issue I know I can bring it to them knowing that they will try and help me resolve this issue.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Not enough. The standard of teaching is not good, there is very little support with how to improve after assignments and most of the lecturers don't care and shouldn't be there. The college is very defensive about its systems of marking which I think is very poor, and to be honest I think they are taking advantage of JLR

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The electronics units are useful, the rest of the course gives me a more general experience which is good. The course somewhat prepares me for university, as I had never written an essay before. beyond this, I learn far, far more at work than I do at college, as I learn from more knowledgeable and motivated people.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are events for JLR employees as a whole, but not specifically for apprentices. There have been some networking events and JLR does offer volunteering initiatives. Because everybody on the apprenticeship gets to know each other, naturally more socialising occurs outside of work between apprentices, but as we all work in different departments, we don't see each other much in work

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great training, a great company to work for, pays well and I get to go to university and get a degree, maybe even a masters after my apprenticeship without ever paying for it. I love the atmosphere within JLR, almost everybody who you will work with is an ex-apprentice so they have great time for apprentices and are always happy to help.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • If you wish to go far in the company, be prepared to work hard, take opportunities that are offered to you, as these opportunities will come for apprentices as everybody wants to give them to you. Work hard and everybody will be so grateful to have you in their team. This will make you want to come to work and will be so rewarding.
