  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in an electrical testing facility where we facilitate the testing of many different electrical components. Some of the day-to-day roles include de-trimming and refitting vehicles for component access, making wiring harnesses, software updates, electrical diagnostic testing and building development prototype electrical systems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt many new skills from basic workshop skills such as hand fitting, machining and vehicle work to the more specialist skills such as electrical diagnostics and electrical wiring.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy coming to work each day and am excited by the learning curve that I have been sent on. Some days can feel mundane but looking back over my experience so far I have learnt a lot.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself has been through some changes since I started. I feel that it lacks general organisation on how apprentices are looked after throughout the business and their overall experience. Each apprentice will get a different experience dependent on where they are based.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a good amount of support from the business and have had the opportunity to go on a number of courses to work on my personal development. As for support on college work and management there is very little, as this is expected to be done at home.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • College work is very much on us to get on with and hand in on time, in most cases the teaching for the units is given to us but in some cases we have to do the research ourselves with the information provided.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Some of the learning that I have done at college has definitely helped at work, but in most cases it is the other way around. I think because I spend more time at work than college I am always going to pick up more at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I believe there are different clubs etc. that you can join, not that I have. As mentioned before I have had the ability to go on a number of different training courses which have helped with my work, and these have been rewarding.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is a big reputable company that will look good on any CV, there is also a lot to learn on the programme and hopefully it will give you a good leg up into the business to progress in the future.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Know what you are applying for, the advanced apprenticeship is not an office based job and is very hands on. This came as a surprise to me, I was not expecting it to be what it is when I applied. However I do enjoy my job for what it is.
