  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job includes helping with the installation and manufacture of new electrical systems on test systems, repairing and manufacturing cables and completing fitting work on jobs. Each day can be different as it depends on what jobs are requested on the day, unless there is a big project that you can work on each day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt many skills such as electrical knowledge, fitting work and I have also improved quality of overall work. I have also completed training programmes to make me work more efficiently in plant. While at college they gave us a basic understanding of different practical subjects such as milling machines and lathes, these were all good and helped with coming into plant. However in the classroom some subjects were not relevant to our job role and we have not used them since.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Working in plant has been good, this is where I have learnt most of my skills and developed the most. However there is a lack of support for apprentices in some departments. In college it all seemed disorganised and some people were not enthusiastic about teaching us, however others made up for that by teaching us and treating us fairly.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not very, in college there was no organisation at times which lead to tight deadlines and lack of quality teaching, this could be down to the college being understaffed at times. There is very little if any support from the management in some departments at work in terms of a proper training plan and help on NVQ. The Work Based Learning Managers are very helpful despite being giving unnecessary deadlines which put strain on them and the apprentices.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • It is all down to managers discretion, I have received time and support from my group leader however other apprentices have not and none of us have a training plan which dictates what we need to be doing and what to improve. We do not have a work point of contact for apprentices as the Work Based Learning Managers are not listened to in plant by some people.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider provided some support while I was at college and some teachers did offer extra help however others did not seem to care and just rushed us to finish assignments which jeopardise quality and learning. The workshops were very supportive and helpful at college and were actually passionate about the work they were doing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There were some subjects which really helped me preform better at work, mainly in the workshop with fitting and practical subjects, there was also some electrical lessons which were relevant to my job and benefitted me in work. Other lessons were not as relevant or at all and I have not used since leaving college.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There may be some however they are not well advertised, there are some networking platforms for people but I would have hoped for some sporting events or social activities. There is the ELS (Employee Learning Scheme) which is really good and helps you learn new skills and do something you have always wanted to.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Really good company to work for, the facilities are good and there are opportunities for progression in the future. It pays a good wage and the working environment can be really good when you have the right person in charge. Most of the people are friendly here and will support you if needed.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Make sure you show an interest in the company and area you are applying for and take on board and listen to any information people are telling you about working here.
