  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Retail business manager running 15 community pubs. Looking after all KPIs including but not limited to sales budgets, safety scores, people development and guest satisfaction scores to deliver a balanced scorecard. Identifying opportunities and delivering key initiatives with other functions throughout the business. Working closely with the site general manager to develop their sites and themselves

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have leant to look at things from a different point of view. At work we all look from the same view point being in the same role, however the variety of roles and backgrounds of people from uni has really taught me to take a step back and look at things differently

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is a very different environment from that of work, but this is welcome break in what can be a very fast paced environment where you don't always have a chance to look back and reflect. Uni gives you this time to talk to your peers and look from a different view point

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Can go both ways to be honest. We have had several different teachers some have been amazing some not so good however the overall experience has been great and definitely a positive one. I think some more time should be spent mapping out where and when things need to be in so we don't overlap so often

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much or as little as I ask for. M&B have been great in terms of supplying us with the opportunity to do this and provided us the space and time that is needed to complete everything. However this is very much in our hands and our time is our own to manage

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • To date I have not spoken to anyone.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I'm not sure I have seen a huge benefit in my role if I am honest. That said I think it is very hard to monitor this the plus points is it gives us time to reflect as stated before the bad part is the day job still needs doing and ultimately this takes time away from that

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I believe there is if you work in head office or live in the near vicinity, however when out on the road there is nothing that I know about. Professional events tend to be with people whom you currently work with rather than networking events although I have not sought this out so it may be that I just haven't looked

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have been with Mitchells and butlers for a long time and would always recommend them as a good employer. They have supported me through many role changes etc and supported my develop including my current uni course. This in turn has made me feel loyal towards the company and hence I am still here.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • Be honest about what you want and how you work and spend some time to understand what the company is looking for. M&B is a bit company and the corporate culture is not for everyone so it is worth spending the time prior to coming in to make sure the culture fits
