My role is in operations. I work with the production team to ensure a smooth flow of production, trying to push out engines efficiently and most importantly, safely. I attend daily meetings, help plan, chase engineering issues and paperwork, I take on issues such as times and bookings myself also.
I have developed my communication skills whilst getting involved on shop floor. I'f also say I've improved my time management and multi-tasking.
I thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship in my role. I do however believe there needs to be more structure and mentorship within the programme. At times a lot of it does feel off-cuff. But, I do learn a lot and enjoy the team I'm working with.
I think the apprenticeship could be a lot more structured for business apprentices. At times, it's a bit off-cuff and there's no learning plan or set goal I believe. There's plenty of support and there are mentors for you to learn off and go to.
My boss, mentor and surrounding colleagues are all nice, helpful and willing. But, in this fast-paced environment. It's not always easy to get the support when required. But I do believe I'm supported well.
My training provider is always available to help and is on site once a week for support and weekly updates. It's very helpful and useful.
I think the qualification does have some uses but given the company is quite unique - I can't say I use the skills within the NVQ much.
There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at schools and there is quite a lot on site such as work experience and/or school visits. There's a rugby team to get involved with too. As well as, 3 peaks charity event and football 5 a side to raise money.

I believe GE is a great company to work for. I do feel I'm learning but can already see roles and jobs that I would enjoy and like to work within. I also feel the engineering apprenticeship is a great avenue to go down.
I'd suggest coming in at a young age and with a big eagerness to learn and take a lot of information in. Be willing and keen, and make sure you push for work and information.
