  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Within my role at GE, I undertake a 3 year apprenticeship. I am on a yearly rotation plan, this means I will get to work in 3 different areas of the business which will expand my knowledge of the business. That will help when I am hopefully able to apply for a job within the Business. I am currently situated within the Training Department, helping organising Training and uploading all their Training Information onto Training Tracker. I also help the apprenticeship team with looking after the Apprentices booking times on a system called SAP.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills during my first 6 months at GE. I have obviously developed the general skills of communication and team work which is included in my day-to-day role. My punctuality has also improved, I struggled with Time keeping at School but it is not a problem of mine anymore. I have also majorly developed my technology skills while using software such as excel.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship programme here at GE Aviation Wales. It all about learning new things, learning a new business and how it runs also meeting new people and getting to know them. The major factor that attracts the programme to me is earn while you learn and for me you cannot beat that.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme that I am involved in is very well structured. It is a 3 year apprenticeship with a yearly rotation. A few months before you are due to rotate you get to list your Top 3 preferences on where you want to go next within the business and the apprenticeship team try their best to move you there. There is a Apprenticeship team in place who look after you and carry out reviews every 6 weeks to see how you are getting along and to see if you need support. One day a week a college tutor comes On-Site to help you with your NVQ qualification.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • GE Aviation Wales have a Apprenticeship team in place which will help you with any day to day inquires that you have. You can pop up to the office and the support that you receive is brilliant. However it can be a problem when the Apprentice Co-Ordinator is off work because they normally deal with the issues and it can be a struggle to find a solution when the Coordinator is not there.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When you are completing your NVQ Level 3 Qualification at GE Aviation Wales. You receive fantastic support from your tutors at Coleg Y Cymoedd. A tutor will come On-Site one day a week and you can go to see them with any issues you may have with your NVQ. The company also have numerous qualified assessors that work within the business that are there to support you with your NVQ. Most companies do not have that.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The NVQ Qualification obviously helps with your job role, otherwise it wouldn't be there for you to complete. You can learn lots of new things while undertaking the NVQ Qualification such as numerous skills. However there can be an issue with setting aside time to complete your NVQ qualification while managing your work load.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not many extra-curricular activities to take part in while you work at GE Aviation Wales. The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head is that there is a Rugby Team but they do not play very often. I cant think of anything else to take part in. Maybe there are activities but they are not very well communicated

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The reason that I would recommend the GE Aviation Wales apprenticeship to a friend is because it is a very interesting company to work for. You will get to learn lots of new skills and meet lots of new people while gaining priceless life experiences. If you are able to complete your apprenticeship to a high level and able to get a job, it is definitely a job for life.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • My main tip for anyone that is applying for a GE Aviation Wales apprenticeship is to be yourself. When you come to applying show what qualities you can bring to the business and the benefits that can bring. If you are lucky enough to get a job here, Work Hard.
