  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am in the tech office and I carry out tasks that help aid in the work that the Tech's carry out. This can include station surveys, side wear gauging and things of that nature. As an apprentice I am tasked to constantly learn on the job so that I can build on my skill set.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • through Network rails apprenticeship scheme I have adapted and developed existing skills, as well as learning new ones. I have learnt how to work in a team, speak clearly and precisely. More so, by doing so it has allowed me to be more confidant in my job role and the work I do.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program to a vast extent. I enjoy what we do and how we do it. I enjoy the experiences, like going to Westwood training centre to learn new skills, and also making new working and social friendships. The facilities and on the job training is impeccable and I wouldn't change it for the world.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The majority of the program is structured to allow for certain units to be completed in certain time frames. First we get all the academic work completed and out of the way in the first year; then we finish all our tickets and work books, as well as on the job training in the second and third year.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. Due to the course being carried out by a major company there is a lot of resources and money poured into the apprenticeship program. I have had help with my dyslexia, travel and work arrangements. All in all, it has been greatly appreciated from myself.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training supervisor as they have the resources, skills and knowledge to be able to help us in every step of the way. More so, they have allowed us to have access to major programs that will aid us to learn and succeed in our roles.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Particularly, most of the subjects that we learn about are extremely important in our job roles as we progressed from the training. on the other hand, some of the subjects I felt that we were taught didn't transpire to our learning necessities which meant we didn't actually use that particular thing in our job roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are many social activities that we all take part in as well as sporting activities. these can include events like tug of war and other team building events that have been put in place on our course to embed core values. Such as team work etc. There is also social activates like a bar and leisure activities.

  • Yes

  • Network rail apprenticeship encompasses the core values of safety, team work, future job success and other desirable attributes that will push us all forward to have great and long lasting careers. this apprenticeship builds us from the ground up to allow for future development and job perspectives that could turn into great possibilities.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • First, I wish I knew before I was applying a little bit more on the railway and how it operates so make sure when you apply you do your research. But all in all, most of the information that you need will be submitted to you via career advisers etc.
