  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Overall my role is completing daily, weekly and monthly maintenance tasks. As part of this, I also carry out heavy maintenance tasks. Tasks can include engine maintenance, filter changes and oil changes. Tyre pressure checks, wheel changes and brake changes. Fault finding, troubleshooting and logging of relevant and necessary information.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new hand skills and to feel more comfortable using everyday tools as well as specialist ones. I have also learnt to communicate using technical terms well with others, and how to write this technical information when requested. I have also improved my problems solving skills, when handling aircraft.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much, I think the work and knowledge we are given is very relevant to our job. We are mentored well by the engineers we are paired with in the real work environment. The planning of the NVQ assignments, could be more organised with a structure of when to complete topics by.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme when with the training provider was well structured regarding the long term plans of the programme. Day to day execution could of been improved. When leaving the training provider, a more structured approach on completing the NVQ could be utilised. Setting predetermined, fair goals for all of those in the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During the training provider stage, support was adequate. We had a lot of support from the instructors there. During our work placements, when dealing with the NVQ minimal support from our employer has been given. Our employer seems to have little knowledge of what is expected from our NVQ and an unrealistic idea on how much pressure and amount of work there is to it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When at the training provider centre, support was given well from the instructors and the assessor. They showed clearly their passion for helping us progress and improve. We could approach them any time. Management were less understanding of the intensity of the course, they seemed to be less approachable at times.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel the training at my training provider is the main reason I have the skills to perform in my job role better. I obtained the knowledge to enable me to do the job, and developed my hand skills enough to give me the confidence. It also help build my confidence overall.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many volunteering events that I am able to get involved in with British Airways. I have helped many times with events encouraging young people to consider apprenticeships. I have also helped with open evenings touring younger students around the base and helping them with any questions about the programme I am on.

  • 9a. Would you recommend British Airways to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend British Airways, I think the company invests a lot of time and expense on the training it gives its staff. They are also a company where, when possible, help to improve the training other students have lost their opportunity. It shows they are invested in helping and developing new talent.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Airways?
  • I would advise those looking to apply for British Airways, to be honest. Showcase your enthusiasm, and the skills you already have, but do not be afraid to admit if you have no background in the subject itself. I had no engineering background, just experience in product design at 6th form, and a passion to learn and pursue a career in engineering.
