Solution Engineer Review

We were taught how to configure the Salesforce program to a customer's needs, then researched what features our school would find useful and implemented them. We were supported through each step of the process but had a lot of autonomy at the same time. We learnt valuable skills and actually created something of use.

I learnt a lot about what office work is like as well as what the workflow of a solutions engineer is like. We had to interview the potential customers to find out their specific needs, then we brainstormed ideas about how we could meet said needs, and then implemented our best ideas.

The work was very varied and creative. It was a very involved experience where we were expected to think for ourselves, but we were supported enough to know what we need to do and how to do it. The environment was very professional and we weren't treated like children.

It was very well organised, we were guided and supervised by someone who works in solution engineering, everything was on time and we always had the necessary equipment (usually this consisted of a conference room with a demonstration on a screen and laptops for each of us to work on)

You could definitely feel the atmosphere of the company, although the work we were given was obviously simpler than what an actual employee would do. The fact we worked in conference rooms instead of at normal desks also made sense for our situation but meant we didn't fully experience what it would be like to work there.

The work experience seemed to be a good representation of what such a job would be like but at the tine I already had an idea as to what I would like to do in the future so that was not really affected by the work experience as much really.

This was done as part of school work experience so no payment was expected. Food and snacks were provided however, which were of a much higher quality than the work experience many of my peers went to. It was also really close so travel costs were minimal, but were not reimbursed.

There were some opportunities, for example we had to practice our pitch to a few employees however networking wasn't the focus of this work experience. We mostly worked in a conference room, separated from the main office space, limiting contact with other employees. Given the type of work experience this wasn't really an issue however.

It was one of the best work experiences available at our school, the project felt meaningful and we learnt a lot. The atmosphere was really positive and the project was well organised as well as having lot of real world application. I would definitely recommend it if you have the chance to go.

I don't really have any advice as this was organised by our school as part of compulsory work experience since they have a close relationship with Salesforce. You'd have to check their website to see if they have more such programs going on, if not you can still try contacting them.
