  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work with young people who have been in the care system aged between 18 and 25. I provide advice, guidance and support to this vulnerable group of people and can advise on any aspect of their life, including housing, mental health and addiction.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt some new academic skills. I haven't studied for some time (24 years) and it was difficult initially for me to adapt to this again. I have gained skills in academic writing and referencing since the beginning of the course.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying this course and I am benefitting enormously from the learning which is involved. I have wanted to do this course for many years and I find that the course material is giving me lots of additional knowledge in the field I wish to work in permanently.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure has been fast paced initially. but this was explained to us before the start of the course. The organisation has been mostly good but there was lots of confusion at the beginning, although this was largely around getting used to something new.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer and I feel that they want me to succeed with my course. There is an understanding around the studying I am doing and the offer of help is available from both managers and colleagues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There is lots of support available. I haven't accessed all the support as yet, but I am aware that it is available to me and I know I can utilise this if needed. There are different forms of support making it accessible for everyone and alternative methods with each.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the learning on the course has helped me to evaluate my performance at work and has educated me on the origin of the type of work I do. the learning is interesting and has given me a new perspective to work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some activities which I can get involved in with young people and events take place outside work where we can spend time with young people and take them to activities such as bowling and to restaurants.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Mainly because of the support which is available. There is lots of support provided by the University and all Tutors have made it clear that they are happy to be approached by students for support and guidance. There is also lots of peer support and camaraderie which is helpful.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council?
  • I would say that it is necessary to give yourself time to adapt to new ways of learning and also take the guidance you are given by Tutors and other staff within the University. Also utilise the support which is available and use the Library and ebooks.
