  • Managing a Funeral Home. Meeting with clients. Supporting the bereaved Liaising with third party businesses. Co-ordinating internal teams. Managing legal paperwork relating to funerals. Invoicing, billing and payments. Care of the Deceased. Health and Safety within the branch. Handling queries. Supporting local community and events. Provide and maintain a class leading service within the funeral sector.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The following skill sets have been developed during the apprenticeship. Legal awareness of requirements and procedures for the burial or of the deceased within the UK. Working arrangements that fall outside legislation at present but are seen as best practice within the industry. Administrative and logistics skills used to co-ordinate the wide variety of aspects involved in making the arrangements on behalf of the deceased. Softer people skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme provides an excellent insight into the funeral sector. It provides an understanding what legislation is in place, how it relates to both the funeral sector and associated businesses and an insight into what may be enacted over the next few years. More importantly it directly relates to the day to day role which allows a practical application of the theory provided within the programme.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured with modules that directly relate to both the current role and those that may become available through career progression. The business is highly supportive of the programme offering ample time to complete the programme modules and opportunities to experience related roles which helps broaden understanding.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As mentioned earlier the employer is extremely supportive of the programme offering ample time to complete the programme modules and opportunities to experience related roles which helps broaden understanding. Colleagues and line managers are actively encouraged by the business offer support and guidance to all who are undertaking their apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is on hand to answer any queries and provide support and guidance in completing the required modules in a comprehensive and timely fashion. Regular meetings are held to reviews progress, check understanding and plan to ensure the apprenticeship is completed on time and that the apprentice has benefited as fully as possible from the experience.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is very aligned to the day to day role of the apprentice and benefits from reviewing and completing the modules were immediately evident. These benefits have only improved as the modules have become more comprehensive and the theory provided by the modules is used daily within the business.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, the business encourages team events that promote sound working relationships and improves team communication. In particular regular community activity forms a significant part of these extra curricular activities as this not only benefits the business but more importantly it provides much needed support for local businesses, charities and community in general.

  • Yes

  • The Co-op are genuinely committed to their core values which include self-help - with members joining together and making a difference, self-responsibility - with members supporting activities and encourage others to support it and equity and their principles of autonomy, independence, co-operation and concern for the community - where profits are directly used to benefit the local communities.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • For others applying to the Co-op the advice would be to take time to review and fully understand the Co-op's core values and principles and then should they still decide to continue with their application to fully embrace these in the same way as the vast majority of employees.
