  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Delivering voice and broadband service to customers through different means. This includes providing new service and repairing and maintaining existing lines. Each day involves working with the customer to figure out the service they are expecting and delivering that whilst meeting Openreach standards for quality. All of this whilst also making sure to complete our work safely using the safety systems and equipment provided.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed new skills relating to the job including: working with tools to complete a quality installation, speaking to the customer to ensure that they are happy with the service or to understand why they are not happy, active thinking to try and resolve faults in a quick and logical manner.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The practical side of the programme was very good however the theory could use some improvement, as some systems engineers use to assist with repairing and providing lines are not shown to apprentices unless requested. This includes tools such as CSS and Geohub. Overall I have enjoyed my apprenticeship and am keen to get stuck into the real job, and start my progression.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised generally, but the coursework and the practical work could link better. The coaches could be made aware of the photographic evidence required and start taking photos early on. For myself I found myself focusing on learning and improving, but had a struggle to get all my pictures as a result at the end.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from Openreach and have good bosses and senior engineers to assist me on a daily basis. There is also a company call centre called coach on demand which gives great support as you need it. You never feel like you are alone and left to struggle.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support I got from my assessor was very good, however I think the actually coursework and work guidance could have been more clear. Initially I thought I had to complete a lot more written work to have sufficient answers to the questions. However it appears that less work would have sufficed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not really at all. As most of what I learned over the course of the apprenticeship has come from working on the job as well as the initial run of training before starting work. I work better in my role mainly Due to the excellent guidance I receive from my superiors.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are social activities and learning activities I have taken part of, and I have registered an interest for some extra curricular learning in the future. The company has some decent activities available but definitely could have more. I am definitely keen to see if this improves in the future.
