  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day activities consist of: going out to site to check sign, lighting and guarding, making sure that the digging gangs are following the map and following specifiations. As a build develops i have to measure completed work. i have to deal with any complaints that regard my site. i have to complete release sheets so when the build is complete it can easily be released to the next team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. i have learnt a lot since starting here.i have learnt how to problem solve and come up with a solution whilest on site, this is from being asked questions or having issues come up with the build. i have developed on some existing skills too such as my time keeping and communication skills as these are the ones i use the most.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, although the start was quite slow it is understandable since my team had never had an apprentice before so it was all new to them too. Since starting everyone has made me feel very welcome which has made me enjoy it more. I also enjoy going out to site and seeing work being done.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • i believe it is well structured and clear of how i will be progressing over the next 3 years. however, since i am an apprentice and i have to go to college, i believe this was not very well organised, this is because i have been sent to a college an hour away where there is one 10 minutes away doing the exact same course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • this is one of the best bits about my apprenticeship, simply because of the amount of support i get and have recieved from starting. as soon as i starting people were wanting to support me and help me in anyway they possibly can, this was not only my team wanting to help but also contractors and sub-contractors that are on site.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • not a lot. i found that STEGTA have no been very helpful, we raised the issue that i was going to a college 1 hour away instead of one 10 minutes away. they did not do much at all to look into this issue. i also started college about 2/3 weeks late simply becuase i did not get told what date i started. STEGTA have also made the qualification layout very confusing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not very much. I believe that the qulification is not helpful in my role, i believe that it just causes more work for me. My actual work does not consist of anything that i am learning for my qualification. the only thing that helps me with my job is just getting experience and learning from other people in m yteam.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • yes. my team does a social event every 3/4 months, this helps us build more of a friendship which helps with day to day work activities. there is also events up and down the country that you can volunteer for. every year there is a christmas party, sometimes with only your team but sometimes with everyone which is a good social activity.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • the company is very much employee aimed. it is a very good company to work for in the ling run. they are very quick to help out with any issues. the specific teams are very friendly and make you feel very welcome and also want to help out anyway they can.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2?
  • if you get to the group activity/interview stage, be confident. show them that you want the job above everyone else. stand out from everyone else there. make sure that you dress smart and are well spoken during the face to face interview. finally, depending on what role you apply for make sure you don not mind being outside in any weather.
