  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an MEP assistant allows me to get involved with the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health systems on a daily basis. As part of my internal training portflio with MACE MEP i have to learn how each system works and spend some time installing and commissioning the systems with the relevant trades.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a variety of different skills since starting my apprenticeship. I believe confidence is one of the biggest skills in my role as you could have all the knowledge but can be wasted if you do not have the confidence to get that knowledge across. Also i have spent some time installing systems therefore learnt how to use tools.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think the programme that Mace put us on is great. We get one day a week to go to University to work towards out qualification,In my case a HNC. Then we get the rest of the week to gain valuable experience on site with engineers etc. The training portfolio we are given also makes this programme extremely good as we learn in depth about the services we install.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say the programme we are on is organized very well. The team running the apprentices are always checking on us making sure we have everything we need and are their to answer any questions. The communication between the university and mace could be better but that is more with the Uni having so many employers to talk to rather.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from Mace is amazing, not only does the apprenticeship team always make sure we are okay the members of the project team your on are always there to answer any questions and give you the time of day to make sure you are learning rather than stuck doing all the rubbish jobs.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • University are also good with supporting me, any time I have had a question or worry they will get back to me with an answer/solution. I do think that having more meetings with Uni would be more beneficial so we can understand certain things about our course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There is a lot of stuff I have learned at uni that i am yet to be able to put into practice. I am currently learning about heating and vent systems and have design my own. This is something i believe will help me perform better in my role on site.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is quite a few things you can get involved in however im not 100% sure exactly what is to offer. I have heard about football teams, networking events, running etc. Personally I haven't looked into them however it is definitely something i would get involved with if asked to do so.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Mace are a brilliant company to work for. I have outlines many reasons in the previous answers but in summary they are a huge company who look after you, pay for training towards a qualification and allow you to earn while you learn. I have gained so much experience from this project.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Be yourself. Mace look for good people to join the team. Confidence is very important as well as the ability to want to learn and ask questions. Always work hard and try to progress as far as possible to make yourself the best at your job.
