  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis, I am involved in a variety of different activities! I currently work within our People team (commonly known as Human Resources), and there is always something new to do. I do a lot of market research tasks, organising meetings, helping with the running of our recruitment processes and attending events such as conferences that happen all across the country. Each day is different!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My confidence has grown massively. I joined the team and firm at quite a busy time, so it was a great way to get stuck in with all of the events and recruitment that was happening. Being involved in this way meant I met a LOT of new people, from inside and outside the firm, so it was a great chance to improve my networking and communication skills. The training that Burges Salmon provide for apprentices is great too, covering topics such as public speaking.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Massively! I can't imagine doing anything else at this point in my life and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to say this is my job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised. My line manager couldn't be more helpful and the support I get from the rest of my team is unmatched. People genuinely want to see you do well and will do whatever they can to support you. The structure of our Business Professional apprenticeship is great too as you get to visit all the different business services departments in the firm, giving you an overall view of the business - amazing if you aren't quite sure what career you'd like to pursue but know you want to work within the business/legal sector.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support is great. You have a line manager who is always there to provide feedback, support and make sure you have enough work to be getting on with. You have a buddy within your department too and they're always there to say hi to and speak to if you're having any issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • It started off a bit confusing at the start of our apprenticeship but it has since become a lot clearer now we have more constant and clear communication with our provider. It has definitely improved, but could also be a bit better.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think my qualification will ultimately help me to perform better in my role as it covers such a broad range of topics from marketing to project management to values. During my study time I am able to link together modules and see how they are helping me to perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are SO many! There are multiple clubs that go on at lunch time, such as our yoga and running clubs. But there is also things after work that you can be involved in, like joining our Burges Salmon football team. If sports isn't your thing though there are plenty of socials that happen within departments, and there are always open day events that happen throughout the year that we can be involved in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Burges Salmon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The firm has such a welcoming and inclusive culture. Coming straight from school and having never worked in such a professional environment was definitely a daunting thought, but everyone at the firm, both lawyers and business professionals, have been so friendly and supportive. The apprenticeship opportunities themselves are brilliant and offer great qualifications whilst picking up and developing personal and work skills, all whilst earning money! There is also chances to qualify further and progress in your career after your apprenticeship. I couldn't recommend Burges Salmon enough.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Burges Salmon?
  • Be yourself! We want to get to know you as a person and make sure you're the right fit for us. But also don't be afraid to get in touch and ask lots of questions, you need to make sure we're the right fit for you too! Attention to detail is also very important in your application form, so proof read and get someone else to check over it for you too. Good luck!
