  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a trainee MEP QS my daily roles include, but are not limited to: - Measurement / taking-off MEP layout drawings - Producing basic cost plans / estimates - Completing valuations and issuing recommendations to contractors - Obtaining quotes and market testing mechanical and electrical plant items - Assisting colleagues with tender and procurement processes such as tender analysis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship scheme and training programme I have developed my skills of becoming an MEP quantity surveyor such as measurement, cost planning, contracts, tendering and procurement. Not only have I developed key skills of a QS, I have developed social skills by interacting with colleagues, manufacturers, contractors and clients. My employer, G&T offer internal training courses which help develop specific skills within the industry. They have also put me through college, achieving my Surveyors Technician Diploma.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship and training programme very much. I enjoy interacting with new people and find the training very interesting. There are loads of social activities within the company such as sporting events where I play for the company's football team. The course has surpassed my expectations and am looking forward to the future years to come.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From the start of my programme and throughout my training and development I believe the course and other training is very well structured. I have received multiple inductions to work, college and university. All tutors/mentors and training given in-house are very supportive and can always rely on people to help.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. The support can include in-house training seminars and CPD lectures, and even help with everyday tasks at work. I have a mentor of which I set beside in the office who helps me when I am struggling with certain tasks. Everybody is friendly and is willing to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As mentioned previously, in-house training courses in addition to the CPD sessions and seminars help benefit me with my everyday role, including knowledge needed to pass my degree. Again, I have a mentor which can help me with tasks that I struggle with or do not particularly understand and someone is always willing to assist.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe London South Bank University have helped me to develop the core skills needed in order to succeed in my everyday role at work. Some of the skills that is taught include, but are not limited to measurement, contract law, cost planning and tender process. My developing these core skills I am able to put them into practice at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My employer offers many social activities. These can range from sports events, to voluntary charity days. I play for the office's football team but also have teams for cricket, netball, softball and dodge ball. There is also plenty of opportunity for professional networking events as my employer has a Next Gen scheme where younger colleagues can meet industry professionals and discuss industry related topics.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Gardiner and Theobald to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • My employer had given me the fantastic opportunity to complete a degree in the field that I am interested in, whilst earning a decent wage. Not only do I benefit from the 'earn-whilst-you-learn' idea, I already have a career started so when i eventually complete my degree, I will already be in work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gardiner and Theobald?
  • The advice that I would give to other people who are wishing to apply would be is be confident and show enthusiasm towards to job role and training provided. Do your best on the assessment days and be sure to make a good first impression. It is an excellent opportunity for a young person to start their career in a continuously growing industry.
