  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm a signal engineer technician apprentice, What I do on a day-to-day basis various greatly at the moment as I am still in the early stages of my apprenticeship. However, it is usually education on electronics, engineering and mathematics.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • yes I have definitely learnt new skills that can be applied to my profession but also to my life. For example, I have a good grasp on electrical engineering which is helpful when an electrical appliance stops working round the house.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I quite enjoy my programme because usually it is both interesting and challenging. Although, there are some courses that I find slightly unnecessary but I do understand why we have to complete them.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think my programme is very organised and well structured. My only criticism would be that I think we spend a bit too much time at Westwood.

  • I receive sufficient support from my employer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I also am supplied with sufficient support when training towards my qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Although I have not received any qualifications yet as I am still in the early stages of my apprenticeship I am working towards them and this has definitely helped me perform better in my role as it has expanded my knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots of extra-curricular activities to do after work. No teams as such but a good variety of social activities to take part in after work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a great alternative to university and it offers good future prospects with the opportunity to climb the ranks if you work hard enough.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • If you are unsuccessful the first time of trying, try again as it is well worth it.
