  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I install and repair telephone lines on the national network. This can involve installing fibre to the premises, cabinet or just copper to the premises. I also undertake repair activities in the event a line is not working correctly or external factors have caused damage somewhere in the telephone network.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • All the skills I have learnt are brand new to me. I had no clue about any of the things I am doing now, but after one year I am extremely confident with the work I am completing. Since starting I have learned so many new skills it’s hard to track them all.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program very much. I have met so many great people and I am completing work I never dreamed I was capable of. The whole experience has been brilliant and after the experience I have had, I would not hesitate in the slightest at recommending it to anyone.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program has been very well organised and structured sensibly. Consisting of 10 days in the classroom getting on with the written side of the apprenticeship, coupled with in the field experience and gaining photographic proof has been great. The way it has been built maximised the effectiveness of the course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive as much or as little support as I need from my employer. I only need to pick up the phone and speak to my manager or a whole manner of people in order to get the support I need. There is always support and a willingness to help people.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again I receive as little or as much support as I need from the training provider. I have needed very little support but if there has ever been a time I have needed it, I only ever need to pick up the phone or email and help will be provided.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think by completing the course on the job I am able to perform to a much higher standard than just sitting in a room and completing units. It has been extremely handy doing it this way as a hands on job requires hands on training in my honest opinion.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities, such as football or networking which I can become involved in within my company. It is a great place to meet people with many different interests and there seems to always be something going on. At the same time, you’re never forced to be involved.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have already recommended to friends and the answer to why is simple. In the years of office work and trying to find something I can enjoy doing I have finally found it with this job. I enjoy all aspects of it and my only regret is not trying to join sooner than I have.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself in not only the application but during your role too. If you are not yourself to your colleagues, you won’t get much out of it. If you’re a good person and want to succeed, people will see that and help you every step of the way.
