  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role will change as i rotate every 6 months however i am currently in Network Optimisation. This requires me to take ownership of a few different projects, such as the provider router project which requires me to organise their de-power so new equipment can be used in its place. I will also be part of various calls to do with other optimisation projects going on such as the new provider routers going in.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learned lots of new skills over the apprenticeship. One of the issues i struggled with is confidence in my self, the apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to push myself and not be afraid of the unknown. Each rotation i have learned a new skill, currently i am working on my project management skill which when i started was not great however through support and self learning i am now at a level i am happy with.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • A lot is the short answer. The work which we do is interesting and engaging and it helps to have a 1 on 1 learning environment where you aren't afraid to ask questions. Our trainers are really good as they understand how to break things down and make things simpler for you to understand.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In terms management, very well structured and organised. I have bi-weekly meetings with my manager to discuss anything important. Every 6 months we rotate into a different department, this is done fairly and in good time meaning we find out where we will be rotating to a month before we are due to go there.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support is brilliant i cannot fault BT at all. Pretty much everyone you speak to or work with is happy to help you, it is a really caring company where managers and senior staff look after their employees and then their employees look after the customers. There is also support from the Employee assistance program (EAP) who provide counselling sessions and support for lots of different things.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot. I have sent numerous emails over to my uni lecturers who have responded within a few days most of the time. The uni also has counselling services which are very effective as i have personally used them. The uni could do with a better standard of teaching assistance as i find some classes only have 1 lecturer to 25 students which personally is too high

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are certain times when im at work where someone will mention something that you have heard about at uni. This happens quite a lot and this helps immensely as you find yourself being re assured that the course is helping your career.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads!!!! The most obscure club i have heard of is the sailing club. There are facilities on site for basketball, football and tennis. We also have a gym that i am a member of. I am also taking part in a friendly football match played at Colchester stadium with the rest of the department i work in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I used to work for a company that put its customers first at the expense of its employees, it was not a nice place to work however working at BT is the opposite. Within 1 month of starting BT the company had given me a work laptop had sent me away to the other side of the country for training and paid my first wage all in all coming in at £3k worth of investment into me. This made me feel valued and cared about which in turn makes me want to do whatever i can to help the company succeed.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would say to be yourself and to not be afraid of speaking and coming up with ideas. Your ideas and what your saying may be wrong but at least you have the confidence. BT also want people who are willing to work hard and not give up even if they make a mistake.
