  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I pickup jobs repairing and/or installing telephone lines and associated services for both business and private customers. This involves a lot of driving and being outside as well as talking to new people a lot.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Have learnt loads, spent 3 months training initially and can perform a number of tasks and jobs relating to telecoms as well as safely using ladders and driving a van.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it, there’s always lots to learn and lots of tools to use to get a particular job done, I feel invested in.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have regular set training days for completing my NVQ qualification and I know exactly when these will be and can communicate with my examiner should I need to raise any questions.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive quite a lot of support, the training days are specially put aside and cannot be cancelled, space is made at company premises for them to take place and lots of colleagues and managers are willing to help when unsure of what to do work wise.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Loads, any questions are quickly answered and we are closely guided on what is required to pass the qualification.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me assess what it is we do and look more in depth at the job we perform and why.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We regularly have breakfast meet ups, visits from patch leads and there’s always a Christmas party, plus we have a social media group to stay in contact.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Lots of training, all equipment provided, job is varied and interesting, I feel valued and reasonably well paid.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Show initiative and the ability to problem solve. Need to be prepared to learn and ask questions regularly.
