  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • FND Cabler Engineer is responsible installing and maintaining the fibre network in new and existing buildings. That could be anywhere from shops, houses all the way up to hospitals. My day to day routine involves getting a job on my phone, driving there and completing the job with a more experienced engineer watching over me to ensure I do the job correctly and safely.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely. I've learnt a lot already on how to communicate better with people while working on behalf of Openreach but also in my personal life, this was mainly via a course that I went on called Your Visit Counts. We learnt a lot about how to correctly communicate with the customer using better choice of words but also the tone used when saying them, also a lot about body language.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program I am on is so far just what I expected plus more. I've learnt a lot about how to better myself as a person from a professional aspect but also on a personal level. The program so far has been very well run and I look forward to completing it and becoming a fully qualified engineer.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course I am on has been very well structured so far. If I have any problems there is a whole network of people ready and waiting to give me a helping hand. The training provided so far has been very useful and presented well. Openreach is such a big company that fortunately there's been many engineers before me that have smoothed out the process.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As far as I can see an unlimited amount. Matt Oakley my assessor is brilliant, I've not needed any extra support due to him being so good but if I needed it I could ask for more assistance from Openreach/BT. My manager has also been very supportive along the whole course.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am entitled to 10 NVQ study days all the while being supported by Matt my assessor pretty much 24/7, I can call/text/email him and I know he'll get back to me ASAP. If I cannot get in contact with Matt I can always reach out to another student within my NVQ group for their advice/guidance.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has helped me to understand the structure of Openreach/BT more than anything, the resources that are available to me etc. As for my role as a cabler I wouldn't say any of the content has helped me become a better cabler and its mainly about legislation and processes used within the company.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Currently we are in a pandemic so all extra activities like this are shut down but in the mean time there has been virtual lessons/activities set up that are run on a weekly basis. I've not actually participated in any but I've heard that they are well structured and enjoyable.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Definitely. They are a massive company with many different routes that someone like myself can progress in. I'm currently a cabler so a fairly hands on job which suits me but there are a multitude of different roles to suit anybody. Also the pay is very good considering before this i knew nothing about telecommunications!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Go for it. Put yourself out there and just be you. I was very nervous when I turned up for my interview but I've never had such a nice experience when applying for a job. If you are even considering it then just do it, you will not regret it.
