  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work on the live network in operations. I monitor, fault and fix any issues which affect service. This involves, monitoring alarms, tasking out engineers, ordering spares and talking to field engineers. I also attend university twice a week and am working towards a foundation degree. I learn on the job and at Uni.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned so many new skills in all areas. Not only have I been given the opportunity to develop my technical skills, but I have also been pushed to identify new areas of strength and have been able to develop my interpersonal skills and presentation skills. Overall I've grown in confidence in all aspects.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship scheme a lot. Although there are some aspects of it that aren't particularly enjoyable, work is work and will always be a struggle at times. I enjoy the work so much because of the team I work with. They are all super friendly and make coming to work great!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is really well organised, especially considering the amount of apprentices my employer has. We have so many and the apprentice team always makes me feel like I am valued and cared for. The course is tried and tested which means that it is always well organised as they have had years of experience.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive so much support from my employer. I have a line manager, a service lead, an apprentice coach and an apprentice co-ordinator. All of these people care for me and support me in all aspects of my apprenticeship and always make time for me if I need it. Fantastic!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is a university, which means that all of the student services they have are available to us if we need it. For example, If we need extra maths or English help then we can make an appointment. I have also had to use the mental health service which has been great too!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that it will help solidify all the learning we have done at university and work together. This means that I will be able to consolidate my learning and be able to perform better in my role at work. I also think that having a base level of network knowledge helps.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are so many things you can get involved in at work/ I am part of a women in tech group which puts on events which help bring women together at work. You can also get involved in a variety of sports such as dodgeball, football, tennis and badminton. We also have a sports day every year.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is the most supportive company I've ever worked for. They really look after my career here and take every opportunity to help me grow. You get to earn while you learn and have opportunities to meet with senior management on a daily basis. You get what you put into it and if you're willing to work hard, you will be rewarded.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I'd say to be yourself. If the culture is right for you and matches with your values then you will fit right in and will sail through the interview stage. When you start at BT id just say to try and be a sponge and don't be afraid to ask questions. But also don't take the world upon your shoulders. Build on your network and lean on them when you need it.
