  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an Ethernet Jointer is to maintain Openreachs’ network as well as build a great one for the future. Day to day I’m out in the field meeting new customers and making connections. I establish a fibre connection from the exchange right through to the customer premises and ensure that quality is kept and the best level of customer service is given. I basically give them their phone lines and broadband!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I’ve learnt a lot about myself and I’ve grown as a person. I have matured into a confident girl who takes on what’s classed as ‘‘manly jobs” and took them on as my own. I am constantly busy and improving myself day to day. When I first started I really doubted my self worth and thought I couldn’t do it, but with the help of my team and peers I have grown stronger than ever and I am doing so well for myself given how I started a year ago! I have massively improved and I will keep on improving.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the idea of training while getting a wage, I’ve been in an apprenticeship before in childcare and it was the same there. Completely different job roles but the fact you can have a hands on approach to the role while earning money is great. The training programme is easy to follow and so detailed, whenever I have struggled with anything on my NVQ my assessor was quick to help and understood my needs completely.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Really well, Openreach has got a strong team of assessors that are so kind and caring they really do go the extra mile to help us all. Even my team is helpful too when I struggled with any of my questions on the exam. There are policies put in place and time given to study which is amazing. I have had lots of days to sit with my assessor and discuss any difficulties I’ve experienced.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So much support, the one thing I love about Openreach! They really do help you when you’re in need and I’ve never felt that I had no one to turn to or help me if I was struggling. They put in days where I can study and focus on my apprenticeship and also assessors within BT to help us achieve our best work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has been great. They really took time to understand all of our needs and struggles within the apprenticeship. Whenever I struggled I knew I could go somewhere for help and I would get the best help. The training provider included lots of in depth questions that did make me think outside the box and relate to my working job role every day. It’s great that the questions relate to our role also.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps a lot. Mostly to do with policies and procedures and health and safety laws. It really made me research our own companies policies to read which I probably wouldn’t of done before doing my qualifications. I learnt a lot about Openreach and what they have to offer within maternity and paternity leave and also their procedures with issues. It was very enlightening to read. I have definitely improved with my job role with the help of the apprenticeship as it has broadened my knowledge and deepened my understanding of how BT works.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There isn’t any social activities that I know of but we do as a team go out and do activities to bond together. There are roadshows and big bold plan meetings where we all as a company come together when there is updates about work and processes. We are constantly involved and in the loop with everything which is what I like.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach has completely changed my perspective on work. I have never had a job where I’ve enjoyed doing it that much it doesn’t feel like a job. Where as here I do! I love coming to work and every day is a learning day, I’m open to change and excited for the future of fibre. I have definitely matured and grown as a person, the me a year ago would’ve been the girl that didn’t go out in the rain or put her hand in mud where as now I’m covered in it and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Just go for it. If you’re ever having second thoughts or doubting yourself thinking you can’t do it- then that’s the best reason to do it! Because even if you don’t know what fibre is or how to splice, you can start from scratch and learn from the best learners. Everybody has to start somewhere so why not start now and be the best person you can be
