1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
We were given lots of really helpful talks and workshops on employability and key skills for the working world. Towards the end of the week, we worked in teams to create a CSR project which we then presented to a high up member of the company as part of a competition.
2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
I learnt a lot about employability and how to make myself more employable, as well as learning a lot about how to conduct myself in a professional way. We were taught lots of important interview skills as well as how to improve our CVs which was incredibly helpful for getting other jobs.
3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
I really enjoyed the work experience week, everyone who we met and interacted with at Colt was extremely welcoming and helpful, especially the people who had organised it, and it was great to be in a group of people of a similar age for the whole week as it made it more enjoyable.
4. How well organised was your work experience?
I thought it was extremely well organised. We were all given an itinerary for the week on the first day, which we went through in detail to ensure we all knew what the week would be like and could ask any questions. Everything happened seamlessly and as planned throughout the whole week.
5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
We learnt a fair amount about the company culture through talking to employees about their experiences and positions at Colt. I felt they could have informed us slightly more by showing us other areas of the office or allowing us to briefly shadow someone at work, as this could’ve given us a greater insight into company life.
6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
It definitely showed me aspects of the working world which I’m looking forward to and other aspects which I might try to avoid when choosing a career path. More emphasis on experience of actual work could’ve helped me be more well informed in terms of choosing a career.
7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
We weren’t reimbursed monetarily, but we were treated very well by Colt employees throughout the week, and given free tea/coffee/hot drinks throughout the week, as well as pizza for lunch on the last day as a treat. We were also rewarded for winning as part of the competition with sweets/amazon vouchers.
8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
Yes, we were given chances to speak with employees consistently over the whole week. We were also assisted in creating LinkedIn accounts to increase our future networking opportunities, as well as being given a lot of guidance about how to network successfully and how to conduct ourselves on professional manners to make good impressions on others.
9a. Would you recommend Colt Technologies to a friend?
I had a brilliant time on the work experience week and I felt like it was very informative about professional life and the business world in general, as well as being helpful in terms of career decisions. It was great to work alongside other like-minded people from my age group for the week.
10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Colt Technologies?
I don’t think I really need to give much advice as the people at Colt we’re all extremely welcoming and helpful in terms of giving guidance and explaining things clearly to avoid misunderstanding. My main advice would be to get involved and enjoy the program, and to listen to the advice given as it was all really helpful.
