Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprentice Review

Mostly I am in an office based environment, and can work on tasks such as researching new technologies, as well as going to meetings to solve various problems with engineers from various disciplines/backgrounds. With some tasks I get to work directly with the customers/suppliers, which is always exciting.

My communication skills have massively developed, I have learnt how to interact with different types of individuals and how to change my language in relation to this. I have also learnt all about Emotional Intelligence (EI), and how to read my own emotions as well as others around myself.

My programme has so many opportunities and really is a scheme where you get out of it what you put into it. I have worked hard from day 1 and with this obtained many rewards; as a result I see a bright future for myself in BAE Systems.

My programme is extremely structured, almost too much. It does hinder with its flexibility to adapt the placements to the individual apprentices. However with this you do get to see each section of the engineering lifecycle and take part in teams you would never choose yourself (and enjoy them!)

I receive a lot of support! This company as a whole is very supportive and is always there for you no matter what type or level of support you require. People notice when you need support as well so sometimes you don't even need to ask!

I receive a lot of support from College, I have their emails so I can contact even when I'm in work. They are always there to answer questions, even if the subject isn't their field of expertise! They also notice when you're struggling without you asking.

The qualification gives a technical foundational understanding which can be used in most roles every single day in Engineering. However for me it's the behaviours I have developed; focus, discipline and resilience is topics I have struggled with but over come.

There are professional networking events nearly every week at BAES, for example the Women in Engineering group or events such as NAW of expos! There are also weekly 7-a-side football and netball games which anyone can be involved with and team lunches/drinks.

BAE Systems is truly a place of what you put into it you get our of it; there are limitless opportunities. Whether it is to travel, to get more qualifications, to try multiple disciplines in Engineering or even change functions - BAES can make it happen if you work for it.

DO your research and keep your mind open, you may apply looking at Project Management but you have the qualifications and Engineering takes your fancy! Explore different apprenticeships and at the end of it all, just go with your gut and you will know it feels right!
