  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I currently work on projects relating to Ethernet and data services. As a project manager, I network with people throughout the business and have to provide regular presentations. These are presented in the form of business cases and are done both locally and over Skype calls. Very happy with my workload.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, my confidence has increased dramatically. I feel more able than ever before to talk to people across the business and I am not afraid to ask thing guidance from other teams and managers. Giving presentations on a regular basis is also a skill that I can carry with me in my future career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it a lot. The support is great and I feel like everyone around me is keen to get the best out of me. It inspires me to work to my ability. Alongside this, the degree is complimenting my working role and vice versa. The university assistance inconsistent, however.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From the BT side of things, pretty good. I get regular calls to ask about my progress and if I have any concerns to raise. From the university side of things, the experience has been very mixed. Lecturers have come and gone and the marking of assessments is inconsistent. Overall good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Employer support is really good. I can talk to my manager and I also have apprentice coaches who are at hand to provide assistance as and when it is provided. Furthermore, each department has their own management systems and I know we can ask for help within these areas if required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support is very mixed from the university. We have had a plethora of lecturers and the overall structure feels very disorganised. We are now 13 months into our degree and quality of content is overall quite good but I do feel like there does need to be more communication between the university and BT.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like if the support was better from the university, it would motivate me more in my study. That being said, however, I do feel like the study side of things compliments my working duties at BT and vice versa. The two aspects both compliment each other quite well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been a member of the on-site gym at BT Adastral Park and the company actively promotes a healthy lifestyle. I have also been invited out to social events with teams in London and also to social meals to celebrate Christmas and other events. I have also helped onsite with volunteering events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is a very diverse and welcoming company and is willing to invest in your future if you are prepared to put the support in. There is lots going on around site as well and plenty of opportunities to get involved. The mantra is very much that if you want to achieve it, BT will help you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Have an open-mind and try to think creatively. Also, going into operations, you are supplying a service to the whole of the UK and its various needs and requirements. You are at the core of the technology infrastructure and this is a real privilege. Go into any interview this mindset.
