  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Yearly rotations mean that we are experience different teams within the business and as such a have varying roles and responsibilities. Currently I am in an advisory and transaction team which is very varied. Typically I will be out of the office every day for a meeting be it leading a viewing for prospective tenants or attending marketing meeting with clients. My desk responsibilities involves targeting requirements within the market through various different platforms such as agents society. I also carry out various different reporting such as interest and negotiation schedules which will be sent across to clients. My role is very client facing and I am in constant contact with clients each day providing updates on the market and th progress on the disposal of their asset.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am constantly developing new skills such as my technical knowledge. I have to understand the practical side of surveying to back up my marketing and negotiation. Most prominently in my current role, I am developing my people skills. I meet with new people everyday so I have learnt how to present myself professionally. This has also developed my ability to network and create new relationships whilst building on existing ones.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I extremely enjoy my program. The yearly rotations mean that I gain an experience of a number of different roles whilst developing broader knowledge of the industry. There is also a great social platform at CBRE, there a vast array of different social events within the team, company and apprentice network and we are closely linked with the graduates at the company

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program has been refined and is now very well structured. As an apprentice you have contacts within HR who can support you should you have any issues. There is also a great network of apprentices throughout the business who can provide guidance should you need it. We have dedicated HR personnel for the apprenticeship scheme who ensure everything is running smoothly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive great support from our respective teams and line managers. They are constantly helping us to learn and involving us in new challenges and opportunities. Any issues outside of day to day responsibilities can be taken to HR who are generally very responsive and helpful. I have regular catch ups with my line manager to discuss work and any other problems also.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We are fairly distant from our training provider. We do have a tutor we could revert to if we have any issues but other than that we are pretty much left to our own devices which is fine. We do have annual meetings with our line manager and Tutor to bring together work and university studies.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not much at all, most of the skills i need in my job are learnt through work. In practice what is learnt at university is not what goes on in the real workplace. The degree is essentially just a box ticking exercise so that we can get chartered. We learn a huge amount more from work than at University.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a very good social and sporting network within CBRE. There are a number of different groups who run regular seminars and networking events. There is also a young professionals network who run quarterly events giving you the opportunity to bring clients from other companies. There are a number of different sports team open to join, I personally have played for our 7s rugby team in the Surveyors seven tournament.

  • 9a. Would you recommend CBRE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is the largest real estate firm in the world which creates opportunities which you would not otherwise have elsewhere. You deal with the highest profile clients in the industry and have access to some of the best people. There are so many different teams within the business there is a role suitable for everyone.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CBRE?
  • Try and gain some industry experience before applying as the scheme is extremly competitive and this will set you apart. dont be quiet on applicant days, you need to stand out from the crowd and staying within yourself wont do this. Lastly, reach out to apprentices already at CBRE, we are always happy to talk about the scheme to applicants and provide advice.
