  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm involved in running a shop at a high level along side an experienced manager. They show me the runnings of the shop and what I need to know and learn to be successful.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt about people management, some HR knowledge which I didn't know and other methods that are useful in terms of people. I have learn what it means to be a manager.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my apprenticeship program and enjoy the 1 - 1 meetings with my apprenticeship manager. I think it allows me to push myself while still being able to learn. Iceland is a top company to work for and the team I work alongside are incredible.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is well structured with scheduled 1 - 1 sessions and a whole list of aims and targets to complete and work on. I know exactly what I need to be doing and by when.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has placed me into a shop at no cost to the shop in terms of hours. I am a free body that can be used anywhere anytime as no shop is dependent on me, that's great for learning and being able to see other shops etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My tutor is available to text/ring any day and provides useful information if I come across something I don't understand. They're very engaging and I really enjoy the face to face sessions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think it gives me a more academic look into Retail as a specific management role. I do already have a degree in Business so some aspects do cross over.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do have social events put on for the managers but they can be far and few between.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Iceland to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they care about their people, and if anyone wants to put the work in, they can grow in Iceland as far as they wish, there are roles available to everyone.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • Just be yourself, but hard work is going to be the biggest factor in whether you'll succeed.
