  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day roles include valuing work that has been completed throughout our contract. Which covers the area of Walsall. Different types of work include surfacing, civils schemes, road-markings, drainage, and reactive services. I organize costs within the contract. I ensure subcontractors that work for us get paid correctly and timely. I ensure we maintain a good relationship with the client and submit bills and quotes to them.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting at Tarmac, I have completed a number of qualifications part time. I completed an NVQ level 2 in civil engineering. I did a NVQ level 3 in occupational supervision. I did a HNC in civil engineering. And i am now 1 year away from finishing my degree in quantity surveying. All of these courses helped my skills, initially the civil engineering and supervisor training helped me understand construction and civil engineering so the work we actually do on site. Then since I have done Quantity Surveying this has helped me more closely in line with my current job however the previous skills I learnt also supplement my current role. Since working full time It has helped my personal skills a great deal, teaching me to be more organised and responsible.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working with my team a great deal, everyone has always been very helpful and understanding to me, as I have less experience than everybody I work around and I am generally a lot younger. I do not enjoy the job hugely but it could be a lot worse and I am motivated to continue succeeding in it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I do not feel I have much support people around the company necessarily. But people within my day to day workplace support me with training, knowledge and guidance. As i have nearly finished my apprenticeship in theory as only have 1 year left of my degree, I have gradually received less mentoring or structured guidance which I think is only normal as I am progressing with my career and taking on more responsibility.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • General attitude towards helping me is good, but as I have been here for a long period of time but I do not tend to need much assistance anymore and I have not had many run ins with HR. Support is good from central services generally for IT and such like.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is generally very good. I have one day off a week throughout the academic calendar. I enjoy university and I am doing well there, the tutors are a mixed bag in that some are very good and some are bad, it varies. But I am gratefully for the opportunity to complete my degree and there is always support on the online university website which is very helpful in completing studies although whilst I am actually at uni the tutors are not always that great.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am virtually doing the role that I will be doing when I have completed my degree already. The work I am doing and the assistance and guidance I am getting is very helpful for setting me through my career. I can directly relate thing I learn a university to tasks in the workplace regularly.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are virtually no extra curricular activities through work apart from a Christmas meal. I do not expect there to be though necessarily as not many people that I work with are similar age or have similar interests. I do occasionally stay in a hotel away if i have maybe a 2 day training course for example

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tarmac to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think Tarmac is a very big company with some good opportunities and it has a good reputation with people in general outside of work. People are mostly very helpful and friendly. It has looked after me very well supporting me with both funding my studies and by giving me time off my full time job to attend university.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • Persevere with work and do not feel out of place, because generally everybody else has worked here for many years and are not necessarily the most welcoming or appreciative of your capabilities or potential to begin with. Because a lot of the job is having experience doing it, but after time settling in it can be rewarding and pay off.
