  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to go to a customers house and exchange their electricity and gas meters for smart meters, in some cases there could be a fault with the meters that we are required to sort out but in others it could be the appliance inspections that could lead to handing out safety notices which could mean turning off an appliance so that it doesn't harm the health of the customer.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt the basic electrical skills by having to be taught how to wire up an electric meter, this includes being macopa qualified. On the gas side I have learnt a lot about the harmfulness of unsafe appliances and being able to look out for unsafe situations and also being able to solder gas pipes which I find is a useful life skill.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think my training program was very engaging as there was a set schedule but the trainers also challenged me to push myself that little bit first to keep me engaged meaning I also learnt more whilst staying focused. It was nice that there was only 9 of us in a group so that we could each have time to be focused on and it meant we didn't feel left out.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In the first week we were given an in depth training plan to show what would be happening for the next 52 weeks of our British gas career, if we had any questions regarding the training plan, we could freely ask them without causing an inconvenience. The training plan was also set out that if you did by chance fall behind there was time to catch up.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support was really good, we may not have had everyone around us for help but our first point of contact was our trainer and if he couldn't help then he had the numbers of the people in the business who could. Everything was tailored around our individual needs so that if we needed help then there would be time to help us.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As smart metering isn't the most common knowledge subject, we had to learn the basics to get where we are now. Everything was set out with different training scenarios in order to help us learn and experience everything we needed before going out into the field. All the facilities were available to us and they made sure we had all the resources at our disposal so that we didn't struggle at all.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that our qualifications make us feel safer in our role, both gas and electric qualifications were quite strict so that we had no choice but to know what we were doing which moving forward has made it a lot easier to make difficult decisions or at least know where to look if I don't know something.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • That is more depending on how your manager chooses to deal with everything. My manager has made it do that we have a christmas party and also a summer get together but as far as it goes for sporting activities I have yet to see any groups or activities. We do get the odd team working events which promote our working efficiency by giving us rewards for the more things we do.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it's a very good business with a very good name to itself, there's always potential to start from the bottom and work your way up and there are always plenty of opportunities to do so by the means of training courses. If you are someone who strives to achieve more then british gas will help you.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica?
  • I would have to say be honest and just be yourself, the best thing to do is to know the role you are going into and also do a lot of background research into the business and the role you are applying for, don't see the interview as being scary as the person could just turn out to be your manager.
