  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Mechanical Designer working at Cavendish Nuclear. Day-to-day involves working on AutoCAD and Inventor creating 2D drawings and 3D models. Creating concept designs, detail designs and manufacturing drawings. I am also involved in the engineering of designs, presenting my own ideas of problem solving in the selected work package.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship I have gained more skills, both soft and hard. I have developed skills on software, I am also completing a Level 5 HND and have gained knowledge to the theoretical side of engineering. My soft skills have also developed due to working in teams and presenting often.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as it helps my career progress, I am then able to take on additional work and become a more valued asset to the company. Completing a qualification part time is definitely more work, however it is definitely worth it in the long run in my career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As the programme is relatively new it is still being organised, I also arrived from a different programme which made structuring a little more difficult. It can be quite a lot of extra work sometimes, however this can be solved when it is properly organised in the future for apprentices.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive adequate support, I sometimes feel like more support should be in place. I also realise that at some point we need to work things out ourselves. Communication can be an issue and this is something that definitely needs to be solved in the future to ensure it doesn't get out of hand.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I provide enough support towards my qualification by my training provider. extra sessions are offered and additional support if required. training instructors are generally helpful and will ensure to support everyone when they can.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I am able to understand the theoretical side more. This means I can complete more complex designs.
