  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I arrange funerals. I organise where the cremation/burial is taking place, who is going to do the ceremony. I arrange for the deceased to come into our care and how they are going to be dressed. I organise the order of service with a 3rd party company. If they want flowers or anything to go with the coffin. I liaise with the client and third companies for any extras that is needed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt that I can type a lot faster than I thought. I am very organised at what needs to be done and when. My people skills are improving every day. I can go out into the community and offer help from the Co op. My communication skills are also improving rapidly.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have not really had very much interaction with People Plus, who are delivering this apprenticeship. I started on May 16th 2019, and have had only one visit from a tutor. I have had multiple tutors and none of them stay . I have finally got a tutor, since January this year 2020. I have submitted units and they are being marked. But I have had to request work from a member of People Plus (not my tutor) so I can carry on while I have no tutor. The programme itself I am enjoying doing the units and learning new things.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is well organised on paper, but in real life it is not. As I have stated in the last question, I have been doing this apprenticeship since May 2019 and have had 5 tutors within that time and no input/output while waiting for another tutor to be chosen in between.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer supports me immensely, they are willing to move me to another branch, as this one is quiet. They have given me help when I have needed to complain about People Plus about the lack of tuition and basic help of "am I doing this work correctly"? they have contacted our learning department to them then contacting People Plus.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Hardly anything. As stated earlier, we have had no tutors that stay for more than a few weeks. So when a new one comes along you have to go over again what you have already completed. I have had to contact the company so I can get on with my work, and the person replying has given me the work within a week, so they have been there.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me greatly, Because of doing the units and activities, I have learn a lot rules and regulations, that affect me in this role. I am learning new things everyday with the research that is required for the units. Different groups require unique funerals that I was unaware of.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Because we are lone workers and are far apart from each other, work activities are few and far between. My company encourages us to go into the community and get involved. So I do cake sales etc at the branch and if anyone is available to come then, they do try their best to do it. The only other time we get together, is when we attend learning seminars.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend working for Co op Funeralcare, my team are the best. They support you and they are there when needed. They let you be "an adult" and get on with your work, without being over your shoulder. They have your welfare and well being in mind. They offer opportunities to get ahead in the role you are doing and encourage you at every step of the way.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Be honest and upfront, by being yourself you are showing them that you can be trusted. The recruitment takes quite a long time, as they are doing telephone interviews to suss you out and will only recommend the best candidate, as they want the best people working for them, with the commitment they are needing.
