  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current placement is project management. In this role I help run 7 projects focused on refurbishing surface assets. I get involved with risk assessments, site visits, legal documentation, stakeholder engagement, contractor engagement task management, people management, programme management and risk management to name a few. I also help ensure worksites are safe and contractors and works effectively and to the safe working practices.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time of my placement I have developed lots of skills and knowledge such as: Organisation skills---Organising people, programmes, tasks, finances, safety and stakeholders. Communication skills---Communicating effectively and in different formats with all internal and external stakeholders. Technical engineering knowledge---Knowledge of steel structures, concrete structures, highways and expansion joints.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love working on my programme! I look forward to coming to work everyday and I enjoy learning something new everyday. I like a challenge and this programme has given be so many of them that I have learnt from. This programme has also been full of extra opportunities for my to develop my career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my programme is very well organised and supportive. I have a network of people I can go to for support and my placements change every 6 months so I can experience different areas of the business and learn new skills. I also have the opportunity to pick my own placements and this allows me to independently guide my career.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As I previously said the support from my programme is very good. I have a line manager, placement manager, sponsor, buddy, mentor and university tutor to support me throughout my apprenticeship. I have regular chat-up meetings with all of these people to make sure I am getting the most from my programme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a university tutor who is always free to talk to if I have any issues with my studies. The course leader for my subject is also very helpful and organises lots of trips to visit sites related to our studies. This helps us all industry context to studying.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My degree that I am studying at University is essential for me t become a qualified Civil Engineer. I can also link my studies directly to my working life by applying the knowledge I have learnt at university to the project I am currently managing. For example I have recently been learning about concrete at university and this links to the concrete repairs we are doing on the Westway flyover.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads of extra activates to help me learn more about my subject matter and develop my professional career. A few examples are: Institute of Civil Engineering Events---Events from qualified engineers to help me learn from them. Young Rail Professional Events---Events to learn more about the rail industry TfL Graduate & Apprentice Events---Events such as site visits, London underground tours and networking events.

  • Yes

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Be passionate about helping keep London moving. Care about the people of London and want to make a positive different to there everyday lives. Be honest, fair, collaborative, direct, hardworking, and consistent. Learn lots about TfL and the London underground so you can be as passionate us about what we do!
