  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm an apprentice so my day to day role is to be trained so that I can be a full time engineer. I have been bench fitting lately and now I'm on to the next course which is looking into engines. On Fridays, it is paperwork day so I catch up on assessments that need completing to finish the course.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills so far with my apprenticeship. I come from a family where no one is engineers or interested in the topic so I don't have much background with it. When I started I knew nothing about it. However now, I know how to use my hands to develop a part in a machine and currently I'm learning how engines work. I've become a great filer and I know how to use a bench drill and band saws. I've learn many hand skills over the course of my bench fitting. These are all new skills for me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot. Right now I'm getting trained under BAE and later on I will be joining the company I work for once I have completed my training. The instructors are super friendly and helpful as well as all my colleagues who I get on with really well. These factors make my job extremely enjoyable and it is quite interesting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is usually well structured when there is not big event happening in the dockyard. However there have been times where it is a bit unorganised and people do not know where to go and what they are doing. other than the big events, I do know what I am doing every day. Everything is structured in manageable chunks which makes it easier to process information.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get excellent support from my employer. They do tend to people who may be falling behind and it really helps. I have gotten extra support on subjects that I am not confident with and it really helps when trying to understand something. I almost always understand what I am doing after receiving extra support. The other apprentices are also very supportive and everyone helps one and other before the instructors are involved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider really supports me when it comes to classroom work, exams and assessments. They help you figure things out for yourself before giving you the outright answer which is an excellent way of teaching people how to use their own initiative. It helps the transaction from school to work a lot more manageable and relieving.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification will definitely help with my role as an engineer because it is not only practical, you get to understand why things are done instead of just knowing how to do them. It will definitely help me in the future when I am fully trained and able to take my qualification to the next level and use it out on the field.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • From my knowledge, there is a few extra-curricular activities that I have taken part in.One of these was out of bounds trip in the lake district that helped further develop my ability to work in a team more effectively. Another extra-curricular activity that the programme has in the Royal navy challenge where everyone is split into groups and they have to try and make a working boat that is able to transfer a load from one place to another. It is a competition that gets everyone involved and it is very enjoyable.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Hythe Marine Services to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE and Hythe marine services to a friend because the staff is all lovely and supportive and it is great fun whilst learning key skills to develop a job for life. Although I do not have much experience with Hythe thus far, the support that I have received from Hythe has been excellent and I can only imagine the support I will get whilst working with them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hythe Marine Services?
  • When applying for this company, be prepared to work hard and give it your all. I would recommend getting work experience or have some engineering background just to help you for the qualification and it would be useful to know key parts of engineering and it will definitely give you a good head start.
