  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role consist of managing site, this includes dealing with plant and machinery making sure it is suitable for the work being commenced and ensuring the plant have the correct documents and certificates. On site I also deal with the paperwork which is filled in daily with by the labourers on site. As well as this, I complete daily allocation sheets which gives us an idea of the activity happening on site, any issues and the type of materials we have in daily.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time in the company I have learnt hands on practical elements of management and how to talk and communicate with the team on site, I can now do briefings and toolbox talks which allows the labourers on site to gain better understanding of the tasks to be carried out on site. Whilst at college I have learnt different aspects of construction which is all new to me and this has helped develop my knowledge when on site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship, since my first day I have felt welcome and settled in well to my job role. This has been achieved by my colleagues and the people I work with. The block releases we have for college has also meant I have been able to meet people from other sites which has been helpful when learning, this has also meant that we are all getting the same education and the best education possible.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The process of applying and joining the company is easy and well organised, the programme itself has also been straightforward meaning that I know what I need to achieve my qualifications and progress further in the future.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support provided by John Sisk has been great, I have been able to ask and receive the questions and answers I have needed and someone is always happy to help with any issues, my apprentice co-ordinator has been one of my biggest supports when it comes to college and my progression.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training from Dudley college has been excellent, so far I have had the right learning helping me to achieve the grades I need.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training from college has increased my ability to be more confident on site as I am gaining more knowledge about the different ways and materials used to build different structures, this helps daily on site as I can put the information learnt at college to practical use on site.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In work we do a lot of charity work which is helping communities in the north west, as well as this I have had support from many women within our company to join the national association for women in construction which helps me meet new colleagues within the company.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The support and commitment I have received from the company has been phenomenal, this has helped me to settle into my apprenticeship well and has shown a well structure and organised company, this has benefitted me as now I can progress my career further with the support of the company, this could also benefit others with their goals.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk & Sons?
  • I would let people know to be themselves, if they have a true passion for construction it is important to let them know it, reading up about the company and their goals are important to know that they are right for you.
