  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves selling tickets, providing help to customers that require any assistance and any admin work that is required in line with regulations. I also check our ticket tvending machines daily and in line with what has been asked of me, I empty the cash every 2 days and top up when required.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have since learned how better to assist our customers as well as gaining an in depth knowledge of the railway and making use of what has been provided for us to better help customers. I have also since gained my confidence to actively go out to customers and ensure the safety of them whilst on the station.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is very enjoyable as you get to learn something new every day as well as meeting new people and being an all round better person. The training is not to extensive and is worked around my working hours which in turn helps me as it means I can use the skills I learn proactively in my role.

    10/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure and organisation of this programme is slightly off as the days are classed as workshops and there is nobody to watch you doing your role to check how well your skills are developing or where there needs to be improvement in order to pass the apprenticeship which is a little unfair.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer, GTR, has and continues to support me and my needs well. I'm not a very easy person as I have medical issues and medication. Whenever there has been a problem, my manager and other departments have been supportive in helping me to move on and providing me with the correct support and advice when required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider I do not hear from regularly at all possibly around once every 2 months or so on and when I do hear from my training provider, it's to remind me of my workshops that I will have to attend. In terms of support and encouragement for these workshops, my trainers are very helpful and understanding if things need amending or go wrong.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not feel that my training provider or this course is being linked up with my role, but rather copying and pasting from a sheet of paper to give to an exam board to say "here, I know how to serve customers" there is nothing in place to ensure that the skills are being used.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work, there are many additional things that we can do. We have the ability to cover shifts at other stations. This really helps to build relationships with colleagues at other stations which I beleive in turn will give a positive attitude towards my role which in turn runs off on the customers

  • 9a. Would you recommend Govia Thameslink Railway to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The support I receive from my colleagues, managers and even customers is brilliant. Whenever there is a problem, there is no shouting or putting the blame on people, its calm and we are able to identify a problem and solve it amicably. The pay is also good and allows me to get things in life I've always wanted but could never afford.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Govia Thameslink Railway?
  • The most important tip I would give to anyone e applying for a role with govia thameslink railway is to be completely honest, give the interviews and assessments your best shot and remember that the people you will be working with are there to support you and help you suceed in your role.
