  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a trainee linesman no day is the same, depending what area of the business you are working on you could be supplying a new connection to a customer low voltage or even high voltage you can restoring power in a fault situation. Being apart of a close team working and building your personal skills growing your confidence over the apprenticeship.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am learning new skills almost daily if SSEN sees potential they will work on you to make you a better person, all they ask is you put the effort in and show that you are keen and you want to be there, the courses have been amazing it’s great to be apart of at the training school and even learning new skills on site it’s brilliant.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it massively I moved over In the business from a tree cutting the only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner, I’m really enjoying learning a new trade I’m constantly learning something new everyday, no day is the same there is some beautiful locations in our region and it’s brilliant to see.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As soon as you start you have a week induction where they have your plan for your apprenticeship staying exactly when your working on site in the depot, your first courses your on, when you are at college or on any other training courses, and if there is any changes in the dates you will be informed straight away either by phone call or email

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a great line of staff either in the training team or your team manager you can go to. someone is always on the other end of the phone incase you need help or assistance even with your learning mentor every 12 weeks to go through any issues and your progression.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Like I said before anyone is there for you are a trainee people look after you. in SSE we have the safety family and also brothers keeper when your out on site just pick up the phone or speak out in your reviews and things will Bolger dealt with it’s brilliant.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Helps me massively understanding the whole job and shows me what’s the right way of doing it. After every course it gives me further knowledge and builds my confidence to help me out on site even the UCT part of it understanding all about the electrical and maths involved.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is lots of things you can get involved with SSE out and inside of work, we have regular community days I personally helped a local hospital in the installation of Poppy’s near Remembrance Sunday and helped them install a display using a mobile elevated work platform. The opportunity is there if you are willing to show effort.

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • There is always a chance of progression and they look after you, it’s a massive company with safety as a priority anyone has the licence to stop, if it’s not safe we don’t do it simple. I recommend anyone to do it as it gives you a sense of achievement and it’s amazing.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • Show willing, be keen you will be rewarded in doing so. SSE will invest so much time into you see your potential and help you grow. Don’t be scared or nervous to ask question many qualified people like to see your keen and willing. Complete your own personal training diary while training to help you when it comes to the training side of it
