  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role as engineering apprentice is to shadow one of the qualified engineers on sight so that they can help teach me about the job and how to perform a task efficiently and correctly. on a normal day at syngenta i will start the day by attending the morning meeting, in this meeting we discuss any issues with plant that need to be resolved these could be either breakdowns or planned maintenance. i will then shadow one of the qaulified enginners while they carry out tasks throughout the day and while shadowing they will also talk me through how to complete a job. futhermore when on a job the engineer i am with will often give me the job and also give me guidance with how to do it so that i can learn.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticship programme has a clear and organised structure that is set out for us to follow. having this structure allows us to keep on top of different aspects within my apprenticeship. for example when working at syngenta there are differnt areas that apprentices work in aroun sight, as part of our apprenticeship we are given a rotation plan which clearly shows which dates we work in different areas. we also have a calender in our work emails which has different events put into it that are planned for apprentices to do such as a meeting every 6 weeks with your manager to moniter progress and make sure youre on track as well as month health and safety meetings and important training, such as teaching us how the permit system we have on sight is used.

  • my employer is always willing to give support wherever it is needed. for example i was struggling with the maths and meachnical principals at college, as soon as i raised this issue they organised for me to have a private tutor and having this support from my compnay has stopped me from struggling and i am now more confident with my work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my training provider can offer support when needed. when working towards our NVQ level 3 we have an assessor provided by the training provider in my case this is kirklees college. my assessor offers support with regards to the NVQ and they are happy to help wheneevr you ask for support for example they will help if you are struggling with an nvq unit as long as you highlight what you dont understand so they can better explain it.

  • i believe the training and qaulification form our training provider helps to provide a better underatsnding of the work place and the differnet aspects of the job. for example we worked on a materials unit and this helped us to understand which materials are appicable to differnet circumstances and when working within a chemical company such as my own it is important to understand.
