  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves paying our employees their weekly/monthly salary. On a day to day basis I deal with employees queries, input data on to our system and make sure our employees are receiving the correct pay. Dealing with a range of tasks such as: Maternity, sick and holiday pay, overtime and much more. Constantly working with sensitive data I must make sure we protect information from being leaked. Overall payroll is always busy and there are always tasks to be completed which helps work towards completing the payroll.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills as well as developing existing ones. Speaking with employees and dealing with their queries has improved my customer service skills and also given me more confidence in general. Payroll can be difficult and busy at times so a good team relationship is important and since I've started this course my team bonding skills have improved immensely, being able to communicate and listen to your colleagues is very important in any working environment and I feel that working within payroll has helped me develop this important skill. Other skills I have learnt involving payroll is how to read payslips and the different tax codes and what they mean, as well as this I've come to understand the laws of business and the importance of payroll and how we do a lot more than just paying employees.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much and everyday is a day where I learn something new. The exciting thing about payroll is every person we pay is different which means every scenario is different and involves a lot of thinking. I enjoy this because no day is the same. My team are so helpful and help me throughout my course as well as dealing with queries and dilemmas and my tutor is very helpful and always able to help with any problem. As a company Skanska are great, they want you to thrive and push your boundaries. There is always opportunity here to do what you want to progress your career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Starting off the organisation providing the training were a slow and weren't very clear but it has improved a lot and is now a lot more organised and know what they are doing. For Skanska they have been great, the support has been amazing and my course and apprenticeship always comes first (something not all companies are like). I was nervous starting my working career and course but Skanska have made it a lot easier and provide me with everything I need to succeed. My manager and I have monthly meetings so she can get an understanding of how I'm doing and what I'm learning so she can correlate that into my day to day work. I also have a mentor from a different part pf the company, this is great because a mentor is able to guide you throughout your course and because they are from another part of the company you can speak to them about any issues you may have.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Skanska is 100% committed to making sure I succeed. As well as apprentices they want all employees to excel in their careers. I am always given time to complete my course work and study, I've ever felt I can't balance both learning and working at the same time. I can ask anyone for help or information and I can honestly say Skanska have helped me so much throughout my course and will continue to do so.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is very helpful. One of the first things they do is find out what style of learning suits you best and from there they assign you a tutor. My tutor has been great at teaching me and makes learning fun, for me this is of great importance and has helped me progress within payroll.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me preform better in my role because I have a better understanding of what I am doing. Getting the knowledge of why am I doing a certain task and why it has to be done instead of just mindlessly doing it is something my training has provided for me.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is definitely a variety of social activities throughout the year, these include: charities days, after work events, team bonding days, site visit and more. There are events help during National Health Week but I'm not sure if there are sport teams. Within payroll every year we attend the CIPP conference, 3/4 members of the team will be invited to attend this and is rotated every year so everyone within the team is given a chance to go.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Skanska to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Skanska to a friend because they are a fantastic company to work for. From wanting their employees to strive and be their best to the social events they hold, I really feel that Skanska care for their employees. A company that sticks to its values and implement them on a daily basis is great and I would highly recommend Skanska to anybody.
