  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently a civil engineering apprentice within Mott MacDonald. I currently work within the Building Structures and Civil Engineering teams and my role involves using technical software, producing 2D and 3D engineering designs and providing support in meetings. These tasks will vary depending on the day but i gain vital knowledge of different computer software's such as AutoCAD, Revit and InfraWorks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot of skills whilst working at Mott MacDonald. The main ones being my skills at using different CAD software's. Through the apprenticeship i have been given plenty of different opportunities to experience the different software's as well as fully develop my skills in using them. i have also been able to develop my confidence through attending multiple meetings with clients i have not met before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love working at Mott MacDonald. The office and the people in it are great, everyone is really welcoming and are fully supportive with the work i complete. I know that there is always help and support if i need it. Through the apprenticeship i have been able to travel a lot more and go visit different offices around the UK.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is set out as soon as you start the Apprenticeship. When you begin you are told how the next few years will look and what is expected from you. whilst working at Mott MacDonald i am given multiple options for what the next stages of my career will look like, this meaning i can adapt to how i want it too look.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have regular check up's with my liner manager, this is to see how i am getting on with project work currently and if i have nay concerns. If my line manger is not available then i know that other senior members of staff are always there to support with any problems i may have, both inside and outside of the workplace.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • i have a meeting with my training provider every 2 months. in these meeting i meet with my training officer for a few hours and we can talk through everything to do with what I'm currently completing. If i am in need of support i know that my training officer can help with this and if they are unsure on the solution they will point me in the direct of how to find it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification i gain through my training provider makes me develop within work. Through this qualification i am required to review the work i have been completing and produce work showing what i have learnt from it and how i could improve. through doing this i can see how to develop further in the future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Within the office i receive weekly invites to different activities that are taking place, we have a football game for the office every few weeks and have regular social activities within the office both at lunch and afterwards. Mott MacDonald also hold social events for the whole of the UK where they are able to all meet up in a central location, the most popular being sports day.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I know that all employees working here in the office thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy the projects that are going on. Mott MacDonald are a massive company and will always support their apprentices to develop into senior members of staff. i would recommend to anyone if they were thinking of applying to definitely do.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Ensure you do your research on the company and what your role will involve. Try and look what the course you will be doing at college and see if it interests you. There are free versions of CAD software's online that can be downloaded, knowing the basic commands will give you a massive advantage when starting.
