  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Transport Modelling, when the government needs a new road built they come to employers like us where we test a bunch of options and report back the results so they can make a decision. Day to day work is office based using computer programs like Microsoft Excel and Word as well as Transport modelling software like Saturn, Quadro, ArcGIS, Coba, Tempro, Trics etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes massively developed skills in Microsoft excel learning new formulas and techniques, also developed skills in word and report writing. Key skills learnt would be the transport modelling software's i have learnt including major progress in SATURN and Quadro skills as well as the learning of Tempro, Trics, Coba and Cobalt

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The company is very good to work for, very relaxed and a family environment, the programme itself is very rewarding with regular trips to college in Leeds who have wonderful staff as well as a college trip to the Netherlands and Germany which is paid for by Motts, not to mention its one of the highest paying apprenticeships in the country.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised, Leeds college of building and the CIHT do a wonderful job of pulling together all the necessary aspects of the apprenticeship which means its structured in a way were you can complete it with help from great support from the college with not to much studying in your own time if you balance your time right at college.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as i need, my line manager is always available for a catch up if i need a chat or technical help. I have a great mentor who looks over my shoulder for me and a brilliant HR team who are always keeping up the morale and are always there if i need them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As much as i need, the course tutor for LCB provides fantastic support technical and non technical and is always there to help weather in person or over the phone / email. The rest of the LCB team are also so handy in there disciplines and are always willing to help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The transport planning apprenticeship has a whole section on transport modelling which is directly what i do at work, although not all the qualification directly helps its nice to have a basic knowledge of what the other parts of transport planning is as it may help me in my future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Loads, in my office alone we have so many clubs, 5 aside football on Wednesdays and Thursdays, running club on Monday, badminton on Tuesday and Thursdays, squash on Fridays not to mention larger social events we do like a company wide sports day, mini golf, bowling, group meals and all sorts of other social events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I already have, i tried to get my friend to apply for the apprenticeship schemes as Motts is a brilliant company to work for, they pay for all your college / uni fees as well as paying very well for an apprenticeship and being a overall lovely company to work for.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Make sure to have done well in your STEM subjects in school (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). These subjects are very important day to day and are the key focus for the employers. The application process is easy and not to drawn out and the interviews are well run as well as being not to tough.
