  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As I work out on one of the many construction sites that Skanska has, my role can change daily. I man the reception radio so dealing with visitors and deliveries is a main priority. Timesheets is another thing that manage, so weekly sending out reminders and making sure they are signed off. Booking and managing meeting rooms is another priority, not just for the client but also for internal staff within Skanska.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through my Apprenticeship I developed my communication skill from my previous jobs. There are a lot of different types of communication that you forget about for working on a construction site. Through every step of my apprenticeship I was supported by not just members of my team but other people on the project as well, which helped me to settle in through starting a career in a completely different work environment to any I'd previously worked in.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Every week there was something different happening on site which meant that there was something different to learn about. As i has no knowledge prior to joining Skanska about construction, i was helped about about all the ins and outs with the processes and the relevance to my apprenticeship. It has been an experience that I would happily go through again.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As I was the first to do my sort of apprenticeship within Skanska UK there was a lot of teething areas that still need to be sorted out. They are very supportive in the terms of training and personal development, however as I am site based and doing my training through an external provider, I felt that there are certainly areas on which they can improve communication with myself and have more face to face contact, not just with the L&D team but also with other apprentices.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As an Employer, Skanska is very supportive of everyone's personal development. the training that they provide onsite based is relevant to the work that is being done and to helping you understand your job on a whole. In the terms of apprenticeship, i feel like there is a lot more steps that they need to cover in terms of Administrative support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider supported me every step of the way. Any questions that i needed answering they would respond in a timely manner. We had regular meet ups to discuss the progress of my apprenticeship and to provide me with any support for my assignments. They really helped me understand my role and helped me further myself for the work that I was doing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Me and my lead mentor tailored my assignments to help me get the most out of my apprenticeship, but also to get the most outer myself for future roles I could go on to. All the work that i produced i felt had a direct link to the work that I was doing onsite and helped me to understand fully my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some things set up, however not on a site level. All the groups and meetups happen at the head offices, which are located in London. I know that a majority of the employees are London based but this feels rudimentary as Skanska supposedly takes pride in involving everyone and valuing people, but this doesn't feel true when people on a site level are excluded form a lot of the guest speakers, day functions or volunteer days which just focus on the people at the head office.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Skanska to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall the experiences that I have had at Skanska is a positive one, there are things personally that I feel can and should be improved, but this could just be from my view and not one that other apprentices within the company share. There are great opportunities for development and progression within the company. The training alone that Skanska provide each and every one of their staff is reason enough, they really do value peoples development, and the people are knowledgeable and supportive. There are a lot worse place to work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
  • Skanska is a company which keeps it Ideals and Values at the heart of everything it does, so make sure that not only you know them, but that you agree with them before you apply. It is a company which is forward thinking and within the 2 years that i have been there they have changed as a company to keep up with the growing society that we live in. Make sure that you understand the future goals which Skanska has set out for themselves and the role at which you would be helping to achieve this future. They are a good company for young individuals who value our society and understands and embraces the diversity which is Britain.
