  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Absolutely fantastic! This JCB apprenticeship allows me to rotate round different unit is within the business every 6 months in any area that I wish. The exposure to the business this gives you is unlike anything I have ever had before. At the moment I am in a operations role where I am tasked with driving down faults on the line and removing inefficiencies.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst on scheme I have improved my presentation skills massively and have been able to use these skills when presenting to a couple of member of the exec board. My overall understanding of how a multinational business has improved massively. I have also been able to manage a small team of 10 people which has enabled me to work on my leadership skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love this program that I am on and would recommend JCB and this alternative career path to absolutely anyone. At first I was a little unsure but since then it has been fantastic and I am now getting the experiences that I wanted. This is something which I am sure will continue.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The JCB side of the program is brilliant I am able to rotate round different placements in areas I feel I may go into. The Sheffield Hallam side was a little bit disappointing due to the lack of communication from their side. This is not being improved as a result

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Any training courses that we need or feel we require are put in place for us and we have a clear development plan. JCB have a dedicated learning and development facility on site to offer all levels of trains. JCB also actively use us to promote the apprenticeships which allows us to work on our presentation skills when speaking to large groups.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • JCB are great when it comes to this. The managers are briefed before hand to let us have time to complete our university work and to all us to have allocated university work slots. Without this I think it would be a real struggle to complete all of the university work whilst doing a full time job.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • For me personally I believe that if you impress in a job role then that shines though far more than a qualification. I also appreciate this qualification can make you more skilled and add greater value to myself as an employee. I hope that as the year progresses I will be able to take more of what I have learnt at university and apply it to work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. Most business units have sports teams such as football teams. As part of the apprenticeship development we also go away on outward bound trips to improve team building and leadership. We also Regularly go out for team meal or drinks to bond as a team and get to learn more about each other and what makes us tick.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JCB to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • So far for me JCB has given me opportunities that I don’t think I would’ve got elsewhere. To be able to say I have presented to a couple of members of the exec within 2 years of being at the company is something not many people can say they have done

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JCB?
  • Just be yourself, if you are the right fit for the company and you are enthusiastic about the brand then they will snap you up. Make sure you have some knowledge about JCB and the areas they work in. They love people who will be dedicated to the company and be free to go where they want you to go.
