  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • We did lots of activities throughout each day. These included ice breakers and skills building, for example working on our teamwork skills through group projects and giving presentations to other teams and employers. We also spoke to existing E.ON employees to gain an insight into their job; they came from varied positions and spoke to us about varying roles on offer and career paths.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I learnt skills like to question what you are being told, as this could be of benefit to you and others around you. I also learnt interview skills and CV writing skills one-on-one which will be useful when applying for jobs. We learnt how to come across professionally and how to make a good first impression.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I really enjoyed work experience and looked forward to coming to the offices to take part. I liked the variation involved in each day as well as doing something productive towards my future. I loved speaking to people in high-flying roles to learn from them, and also really loved meeting other people my age from different areas. The buffet helped too

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • It was very well organised - the speakers always turned up on time and had well structured talks. Our group activities never overran but we still had time to do everything planned and at a comfortable pace too. We were always informed of where we needed to be and when which made it less stressful. The routine was comfortable and well organised.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt lots about the company culture, from talking to lots of employees from different departments and seeing how they worked together. However as we were in one room all week, I didn't learn that much about what it would be like to work there as it is unlikely that should I work there, I would always be tucked away in the conference rooms at the back of the buildings.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • The week gave me a very good insight into what the industry would be like to work in and this has given me food for thought. It made me realise what apprenticeships can lead to, and they were something I had not considered before. Talking to so many different employees helped me rule out some jobs and prefer others.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • I was not paid as it was a work experience/careers inspiration week and we did not contribute to the company's work at all. However I was promised to be reimbursed for travel expenses of up to £20 per day; but have not received this to date. Breakfast, lunch and drinks were provided for free.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • We participated in an informal networking event where we spoke to lots of employees in a very short space of time. Some employees gave business cards so if we were interested we could contact them to find out more about their job. Apart from this, we were not included in meetings and company events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend E.ON to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I fully enjoyed the week and found it rewarding as well as fun. I learnt skills for my future and gained insights into future career possibilities which I have found very useful for considering my future even after the career inspiration week. It was also a great way to meet new people and learn about a large energy company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to E.ON?
  • I would say to make sure that you are interested in energy and renewable energy in particular as there is a lot of talk about this throughout the week. Also be ready to participate all day every day as it is a very interactive week, and doing so means you get the most out of the week. There were no assessment days etc that I could have gone on.
