  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On Mondays I go to college where I do subjects like electronics and business. We do lessons that give us the knowledge we need to pass the course. For example, we recently did a lesson on external factors in an engineering business. The rest of the week we are in our placements where we learn about the different aspects of the company.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills. These include things such as fault finding, soldering and project management. These have all helped me as I use them to carry out tasks in my placements. I have also developed my existing skills. These include things such as maths as it is one of my BTEC subjects.

  • I enjoy my program a lot because the work is interesting, which keeps me engaged. Another reason I enjoy my program is because of the extra activities I get to do. • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is very well structured and easy to follow. I am given many different documents which tell me which placements I am in. Also, I have a booklet which tells me what I will be doing in the placement. For BTEC we use moodle. This is where we can find all of the handouts from lessons and also find out when assignments are due.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. For example, for our current project they are doing reviews to tell us the good and bad points about our project and how to improve it. Also, they ask us if we need any extra support. They also conduct NVQ reviews every 6 weeks and general reviews every 12 weeks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualifications help me in my role by teaching me the skills I need, to carry out the tasks in my placements. For example, I have learnt things like soldering and fault finding which I use to work on products my company makes. We also learn things like Arduino which makes life easy when making things for my project.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend them to a friend because the apprenticeship they offer teaches you a wide range of skills and will help you with many things in later life. The work they do is interesting and engaging which helps keep you motivated and also makes writing reports about what I have done easy.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • You must show you have a genuine interest in electronics and you must also show that you have an interest in the company itself. Ensure that you research some of the products the company makes. You need to show that you are hard working and can work well with others.
