  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I was able to choose an area of engineering interest (software, hardware, mechanical etc) and was given 2-3 mini projects in this engineering area which involved learning to use CAD software from scratch to 3D printing tools and getting feedback from the user. I mainly acted as a helping hand in the office to get through some of the smaller jobs that could be done whilst the engineers focused on their important deadlines.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before the placement I had never used CAD software before but I learned the basics in the first few days and within the first few weeks I was creating full models, accounting for accuracy and efficiency of printing. I also observed my colleague working on a firmware project which gave me a head start with how to approach problems when it came to coding at university.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I found the programme very enjoyable, not just because of the skills I learned during my time there but also because of the staff. Everyone welcomed me openly and I was made to feel like a regular member of staff. The engineers were always glad to help me through any issues I had with CAD designs without any judgement and were keen to help me develop my skills.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was structured well as we had a 2 week induction in which we were able to tour the departments which gave us a better insight into how we could put our work to use. We had a schedule for this time which was flexible around any time we were absent or busy with work so we never missed out on any of the departments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I felt very supported in my work as the engineers would be quick to answer any questions that I had regarding the work, and our manager Steve would check up on our progress regularly. The HR team were also great support as they gave us lots of important information in our welcome talk and made us aware of all of the services which they offer so we knew where to go if we ever needed help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There was no qualifications involved in this training programme. However the employers were very supportive of my academic progress outside of the programme as they were keen to stay in touch with me as I progress through university and even before, congratulating me on my GCSE and A Level results.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There was no qualifications involved in this training programme. However I definitely feel that the Physics and Mathematics A Levels that I took before the placement, particularly mechanics, were useful as at times I had to calculate forces and moments to apply to my computer simulations to test the tools.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I noticed that whilst I was working at Megger there was a charity Muddy run which was being run by a team of staff which looked like great fun! I was also invited to a leaving party outside of work which made me feel very included as a member of staff.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Megger to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great company to work for with great company values and the training provided is going to give me an invaluable head start in my future career. It was an opportunity to learn a new skill during the summer and a great way to earn money before university.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Megger?
  • Be willing to take part in every activity they offer you, even things that may not seem relevant to your field of work can offer a great insight to the company as a whole and will allow you to meet the members of staff. Make sure to network and stay in touch with your colleagues.
