  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Generally my role is to ensure customer satisfaction and that myself and the team are providing excellent service. I have to lead a team, setting the example and ensuring that everyone in that team is safe and legal. I am responsible for handling large amounts of cash and handling issues that arise on my shifts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst working for greene king, I have greatly enhanced my customer service skills. I have become far more confident with handling difficult customers, and how to diffuse the situation. I have also learnt valuable business skills such as how to manage monetary targets within work and how to use my resources on shift.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my role as it allows me freedom to work flexibly, and the busy work environment means I’m not stuck at desks, and I’m on my feet all day. I enjoy working with the customers and the team. I do not enjoy the current values of greene king as I do not believe they allow for a unique customer service style.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised. The company is very clear on its goals and provides plenty of information to ensure its team are kept up to date on what is occurring within the business. Everyone is given a clear understanding of their roles. However, some places get a lot more freedom than others, and that can be difficult.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Plenty of support is provided by my employer, they’re always there to ask if I need advice on some parts of the job/qualification that I lacked experience with, and they allowed me time to sit down with the leader of my qualification to discuss the work I have been given.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Plenty of support is provided by my employer, they’re always there to ask if I need advice on some parts of the job/qualification that I lacked experience with, and they allowed me time to sit down with the leader of my qualification to discuss the work I have been given.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification provides more insight into the role I perform and helps me to consider different approaches I could take to the role in day to day life. For example, a part of the qualification had me research motivation methods, and I found that I could apply what I learned to the job to motivate the team.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a large forum for people in different pubs to share their ideas and knowledge.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Hospitality is becoming a worse place to work than ever. With less labour, you’re working harder for your money, and that’s not gone up, it’s not a very good wage for the stuff you have to put up with on a daily basis. They may be one of the better pub companies, but I would never recommend the hospitality industry.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • Make sure it’s something you really want to do. And if you’re doing it just as a part time job, don’t let yourself get stuck.
