  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job is to run the store, open and close, managing and delegating jobs to my team, planning the rotas, ensuring the store is legal & compliant. I always keep my Team updated & make sure they are all delivering good customer service. I also keep the shop tidy and make sure products are of good quality. My job requires working with my team and other stores and managers when necessary.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’ve learnt a lot over the years but perhaps more so in the last few years as I’ve progressed and it’s more so about gaining respect from my team and working hard. I think more now about what I say and how I react to things I’ve learnt to deal with certain situations better than I would have a few years ago. So it’s more a personal growth. I’m regards to the store and my job, I’ve learnt more in terms of paper work/rotas etc and things I wasn’t sure on or didn’t know before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I don’t really enjoy it as much as I thought I would have, in the beginning it sounds fine and then you realise how much you have to do and when you’re in a job like mine you barely get time to sit down and have lunch let alone do a load of coursework on top. Even in my own time I would have a day off but I never got time to myself because I’d either have to catch up on my work or try do all my other errands outside of work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I’d say it’s pretty organised, I was always pre booked in for visits and kept update with anything I’d need to know. For me it was more so finding time to get the work done. The only issue I had was around Christmas time you barely get any work done so a few months worth of work gets put to the side and then I’d find myself playing catch up. So in terms of Organised there, I think they should consider how much work is given out around that time of the year, personally.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I always received support from my manager, had a few different managers whilst being on the course, the first manager very supportive I’ve worked with for years, helped me whenever I needed it, but the change in managers proved a struggle in the begging so I almost lost that support system but over time it improved, always had time allocated to do my work and was always offered help if needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support from my training provider was good, never really had issues. But if I ever needed help they were always available over email or the phone, never really had to wait too long for a response and kept me up to date with anything I’d need to know. Had a few different trainers over the course of the year So it’s been a bit weird having to keep being handed over to someone new when you know where you’re at however they’re all really supportive.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • To be honest. I don’t think it helps me perform better in my role, if anything it’s just added work load. Personally for me, I’m already doing the job role and I feel like this qualification would perhaps benefit new starters to the business instead of staff who have been there years and know the job like the back of their hand.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do try as a team to organise activities days out, we don’t do it often so it’s something that could be improved. It’s hard trying to get everyone together at the same time when we all work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Iceland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think Iceland’s a good place to work and shop. I’ve worked there for years and if I disliked it as much as I probably say I do (when having a bad day) I doubt I’d still be there! It’s more so the people you work with that make it a good place and if you enjoy where you work then you can’t really complain.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • Do it. But be prepared, if you’re looking to progress to management it’s great to have the knowledge and responsibilities but it’s a very physical job and the work life/home life balance can be a struggle at times! But other than that happy place. Great teams friendly people
